Autodesk Combustion 2008 Tutorials

Operators / Edit Operator

Subtitles of the Movie

Even though Combustion is in itself not a full-fledged video editing application such as Premier Pro or Final Cut Pro, it still has a pretty good set of tools that allow you to do some moderate editing. So we can create a new Edit Operator and then import some footage into it and then make some edits. I'm going to go to File, New and choose Edit from the Type List and as you see, we have our Edit Controls and all we're waiting for now is something to actually edit. So I'm going to import some footage. I can either go to the File Menu and choose to Import Footage from here or I can do this from within the Edit Operator itself. And as always, I will focus more on this tool later on. So I'm going to Import Footage. I was bringing this particular file and now we have something in the Edit Operator. And I can scrub the controls here, the Playback Head and I can see what's going on inside of the video. Now, sometimes when you have a pretty long file, you might want to turn Feedback off so that when you scrub here, nothing happens here. So you can click to deselect the Feedback Control and you can just move around inside of your footage without having to worry about that. Now, I like to keep it on mostly, but I'll leave it off for now just to show you that we can edit this footage in several ways. I can cut this footage by using the Cut Option. And I'll scrub my Playback Head to about here. I'll go ahead and cut the footage. I'll move the Current Time Indicator over here and click here, cut that and I'll move it out of the way a little bit. So you see we have this lines here. And this is where the footage has actually been cut. So I could move it down or I could get rid of it. I could put it somewhere else. I can rearrange the footage you saw there. I just kind of moved the beginning to the end and vice-versa. So the footage is completely different when I scrub it and play it back. I also have the ability to work with In and Out Points and pretty much everything else I can use in a full-featured application. I can also see the footage in the Timeline. So here's my Timeline and here is the actual footage as it appears in the composite. So if I want to, I can also delete things. So I have this piece of footage, this piece of footage and this piece. So I'll go ahead and just hit Delete on my keyboard and that's gone now. That piece of footage is now gone. Now, before I end this particular lesson, I want to assure you that you're not actually affecting the real movie. This is only a reference to it. So it's alive and well on your hard drive. So no real movie frames have been harmed with this operator. We're only cutting it and moving it around and changing it in Combustion. If I were to go to my hard drive and double click to open up this video, it would be completely intact. And even inside of Combustion, we can always go back to the original footage. We could Undo, we could Import the footage again and have it brought back completely fresh and start all over if we need to. So I just wanted to say that because it's important that people understand that the footage is never really harmed. It's only pointing to the footage somewhere on your hard drive. So this is the Edit Operator and we will talk more about how to use it in depth later on in the tutorial.
