Operators / Paint Operator

Subtitles of the Movie

You can create what is known as a Paint Operator inside of Combustion to create Vector Graphics. Let's go to the File Menu and choose New and then from the Type, click and hold the mouse and choose Paint. And of course you can change your Format Options if you need to. Don't forget you can always click on this List and choose any of these different options. But I'm going to choose the NTSC and I'm going to change my Background Color. Doesn't really matter what color you have, but this is the color that will show through to the Background whenever you have something that has some kind of Alpha attached to it. And of course you can always choose your Bit Depth as well. The higher the Bit Depth, the more colors you'll be working with and the more information you'll be working with as well. But eight bit is going to be good for our purposes here. You can also set a Duration for a Paint Operator as well, but I'll leave this at defaults for now. I'll click OK and now we have a Paint Operator. What I'm going to do is just change my Display Mode right here so we see just one Viewport and I can also zoom out or zoom in as needed. As you see here, our Toolbar changes to reflect the Painting Tools. So what do we have here? We have our Hand Tool, which is known as a Grabber, of course, or the Move Tool in many applications so you can move things around. You can zoom in and out with your Magnifying Glass. You can use the Compare Tool. You can Erase, you can Flood Fill Shapes and you can also create other shapes that will provide you with a fill automatically or a stroke. As you see here, if I choose the Stroke Fill, I can click and draw out a shape and the stroke is reflected in this color in our foreground swatch. So I'm going to press Command or Control Z to Undo that and I'll click to change this by going to the Color Picker, choosing a color, accepting it and I'll draw a new shape. And as you see, we have a blue rectangle this time. I can also change my colors by going over here to the Swatches. Let's talk about this other guy. This is a filled rectangle and if I move my mouse to the right very quickly, I reveal other tools, such a Filled Ellipse. I'll go ahead and choose that this time I'll change my color, click and draw out an ellipse. I can move this around by clicking on the Move Tool or the Black Arrow and move it down wherever I'd like to work. I can, of course, rotate and move my mouse right out here, but since it is a circle, you really can't tell anything. So let's go ahead and just stretch it out by pulling on its sides and then I can see the change now when I rotate. It's very easy, by the way, to make shapes and keep in mind that these are Vector Shapes. They're similar to the shapes you'd find in Adobe Illustrator and in Adobe Flash. I can click on this Icon right here to add Points. These are called Control Points and I can click along the edge of the shape, known as a Path, to create new Control Points and I can click and drag to change the shape. We'll talk a lot more about the Paint Operator later on. But as you can see, I'm making a pretty makeshift fish here and just by using a couple of Points and moving them around I can draw, starting with a simple sphere to create a shape like a fish. So once again, we'll talk more about this operator later on in the tutorial.
