Introduction / RAM & Processor Speed
Subtitles of the Movie
Combustion, like Photoshop, requires a good chunk of RAM and a pretty hardy processor in order to really take advantage of the special effects that you can generate with the application, such as working with particles. And we're going to build a volcanic eruption later on in the tutorial. But as you can see, when looking at particles, each one of these particles is actually composed of many, many individual images. And these can take a lot of RAM to render, especially when you're dealing with water and flames and fire and then you add them to your composites and build more and more complicated special effects. The composite that we're going to work on in Combustion, let me give you a little sneak peak at one of them, is going to be the volcanic eruption. So we have a little smoke plume, we're going to have an explosion, fire and rising tide. Now, the tide alone, I don't even want to know how many particles are in there. But if your computer isn't powerful enough, you will have a difficult time rendering this. But I will give you some tips and pointers in the specific part of the tutorial when we talk about how to build this volcano as to how you can get around not having enough RAM. Now, I'm using a Mac Pro and I have a 2 time 3 gigahertz dual core Intel Xenon. I have two gigs of RAM and I do pretty good with Combustion. Of course, I wouldn't be able to add a kabillion particles and I don't think anybody but NASA could, but I just wanted to say that you want to have enough processor speed so that Combustion and your computer is able to think faster and calculate faster and what RAM will do for you is give you the ability to work more on keeping Combustion open with other applications if you need to, such as Photoshop. Now, if you only have a little bit of RAM, just work with Combustion. Close your other applications so all of your memory will be able to be dedicated to Combustion. So if you can, get some more RAM. If you, especially if you plan to use Combustion professionally, to add special effects to your own projects or to projects you do for clients. So you want to just check your local computer store. Give them a call or go online and check out some of the online warehouses for computers. Once again, you might want to have some more RAM so you can scrub your Timeline and see your explosions taking place in real time.
