Autodesk AutoCAD Electrical 2010: Basic Concepts Tutorials

Project Basics / Copying Projects

Subtitles of the Movie

OK, so let's now look at Copying a Project. We have our ACADELE2010 Project there. What I want to do is I want to copy that project and make another project from it. Now obviously here it's just a basic drawing. There are some rungs and some ladders there and some circuits. It's all very basic. We'll get into more depth with the actual drawing content as we work through the AutoCAD Electrical 2010 Course. What I'm showing you here is how to copy projects when you've got hundreds, maybe even thousands of drawings. So we want to copy our project. Now the best way to do this is to go to the Project tab there on the Ribbon. There's our Copy Icon there on the Project Tools Panel. So I click on Copy like so and you'll see that ACADELE2010 there is in bold. The good thing about that means it's the Copy Active Project. It's highlighted in bold because it's active. Copy Active Project, it just drops it straight in. So I'm copying - can you see there - the WDP file, the Project File? So I OK that now and there's my WDP file there. Now what I'm going to do now is select a new path and a new name for the new project, so I'm going to go up one folder level and, you can see there, I've already one test one there, can you see I've got 2010 underscore 2. I'm going to create a new one now that has a new name, so I go New Folder, like so and it's still going to be ACADELE2010 but I'm going to do an underscore and put the word COPY like so and press Enter. So there's my new Folder. I now need to give the new WDP file a name as well; that'll be ACADELE2010 and again, underscore COPY. So it tallies up with the Folder Name. So I'll click on Save there. I now say Do All, so I'm going to bring all of my drawings across and then I'm going to click on OK. Now, the active drawing is one that is listed to be copied. I've got COPYING PROJECTS open, COPYING PROJECTS is the current drawing. I'm going to have to Cancel that and what I'm going to have to do is close that drawing down. So I'll close it there. Notice as well I've got Project Files open as well. I'll have to close that one too. Save the Changes? Yes, please. Now, open up a new drawing off the Quick Access Toolbar. Just use the acadISO Template for now and click on Open. Now you must have a blank drawing open so that you can work with your Project Files and so on, but I haven't got any of those drawings open this time. Always remember that, because you must have those drawings closed to copy the entire project across. So I click on Copy, Copy Active Project, same File name again, click on OK. There's the file there, I go up one level. Now the good thing is it's remembered the folder, so I can go in there, double-click in there and change that File name just quickly to underscore COPY. It's remembered all of that, but because that drawing was open I couldn't do anything. So I click on Save, Do All, hit OK this time, they all go across. You can see there, as well, there's my ACADELE2010 Copy Folder, so that's the location for the Project drawings and the WDP file. So when I OK that now I can either Edit; what I can also do here, look, can you see the names of the drawings there? I can do a Find and Replace and if there are any names that need changing I can change them. I'm not going to in this particular case. I'll just Cancel that and click on OK and there we are. It's done. Now, notice I have a new Project, double-click there. It's actually opened up with the first drawing available. Now you'll notice the Sheet numbers aren't there. Well, that's OK. No problem. What we can do there is a right-click, Properties, Drawing Properties there, Sheet 01, all that information is there. OK? All I need to do is go to the Project and go to the Properties here and remember, I need to change that display. Is it in Project Properties? No, it's not, is it? Do you remember, it's this Icon here, Display Configuration. So I'll just take Sheet Number off, remove it, let's go and find Sheet Number again, there it is there, add it across, move it up, OK it and there they are. It just needs resetting when you do a copy of the Project. So there's our copied Project - Copy, rather than ACADELE2010. So you can see there how quickly it is to copy a project that you worked very hard on. You might have another project to work on that is very similar or it might be that you need the same electrical layout for another project so you don't have to reinvent the wheel, you just copy your Project.
