Objects & Data / Divide
Subtitles of the Movie
We're now going to look at the Divide Command in AutoCAD. Now what this does apply to is also Points as well, so what we did here, we used individual Points to set up the Small Shrubs there on the frontage for the garage as we develop the residential property that we're actually working on in this drawing. Now what I want to do is I want to place some shrubs equally along this Setting Out line here. Now what I can do here is I can utilize my Points and these are, again, on the Draw Panel. So I click on the Fly-out arrow here and I pin open the Fly-out Panel like so. Now if I click on this little down arrow here you'll see that I've got three options: Multiple Points, that we used earlier; I've also got Divide, and Measure. We'll look at Measure later. What I'm going to utilize is Divide. So I'm going to click on Divide now and come into the Drawing Area. It prompts me to select the object I want to divide into equal segments. Now what will happen is, if I just select the line here, like so and then enter the number of segments I want to divide it into, in this case 11, and press Enter, it'll actually place the Points as in the Point Style I set up earlier, along that line. So it's broken it down into 11 segments and at the intersection of each segment it's placed a Point, a Setting Out Point, for me. Now that's great, but what I'll have to do now is literally insert a Small Shrub Block on each of those Points, and also at the Start point and the Endpoint of the line. Now I don't want to do that. Why do all that work and place all those blocks, or place one and then copy them all when, what I can do is I can utilize the Divide Command to my advantage. Let's just undo that Divide Command there. Let's do this slightly differently. Let's go back to Divide here, so I click on the down arrow and I select Divide. I come into the Drawing Area now and select the line to Divide, like so, and then move away from the line. It's prompting me to enter the number of segments. If I press the down arrow though, or right-click on the Shortcut Menu I get the option for Block. If I click on Block now it asks me to enter the name of the block that I'm going to insert which is going to be Shrub underscore Small, like the ones I put in the front of the garage. When I press Enter now it prompts me: Do I want to align that block with the object? In this case, the Setting Out line. So I press Enter there to accept the Yes, Enter the number of segments again, 11 like before, and press Enter, and it places those Blocks on the current Drafting Layer along my Setting Out line. So all I've got to do now is click on Insert here; there'' my Small Shrub again, I click on OK, place one at the end of the line, left-click; I'll do the same again Ð Insert, OK it, place one at the end of this line, left-click, and I've now got my shrubs placed exactly at 11 equal segments along the front of the house. Look how quick and easy that is. I utilized my Blocks, I utilized my Points, and I get exactly the right spacing for those small shrubs along the front of the house. They can even be dimensioned if necessary.
