Objects & Data / Purge
Subtitles of the Movie
If we go into the Layer Properties Manager here and look at all the Layers in the drawing you can see the ones being used have a blue sheet of paper next to them. The ones that aren't being used have a little gray, almost white, sheet of paper against them. Defpoints obviously is used for things like insertion points in Blocks and Dimensions, so you wouldn't want to delete that Layer even if it's not being used anyway, but if I scroll down you'll see there's Topography OLD and Wipeouts. Now I might want to keep Wipeouts but Topography OLD, the OLD there in the layering convention tells us that that Layer needs to go. I could just select it and hit the Delete button here, but that only does Layers. There is a tool in AutoCAD that allows you to actually remove all of the objects that you're not using, and that is a command called Purge. So, let's close the Layer Properties Manager and you can type the word purge Ð P-U-R-G-E Ð like so, and press Enter. That will bring up the Purge dialog box that way, or you can actually just go to the Application Menu, click here on the arrow, go to Drawing Utilities, and there's Purge there as well. Now you can view items that you cannot purge, so if I click on Blocks, these are all the Blocks that are being used at the moment, or I can view the items that I can Purge. So, if I look at these Blocks here I've got an Elevation in there somewhere, which is a bit weird considering this drawing is in plan. So, I can actually remove that if I want to. So if I click there, Elevation-Exterior; Confirm each item to be purged Ð Yes. I'll also purge any nested items, such as nested blocks if they're referenced within other unnamed objects, for example. What it also gives me the option to do is to purge zero-length, geometry, and empty text objects. So for example, you'll notice there's a little. just here. That's a zero-length line. So if I click on Purge now: You're about to purge block Elevation-Exterior, what do you want to do? I want to Purge that item from the drawing. So I click there: Purge this item. So, that block is now gone. But you'll notice, look, all these blocks can now be removed because they were also in that Elevation. So I can purge all of these now. So, there's Level, I can purge that, so I Purge it: Purge this item, and so on. I'm not going to bother clicking on all of those. That would be kind of mind-numbing for you to watch, but it gives you an idea of what's going on. If I scroll down now, Text styles, if I click on the Plus sign there there's an Annotative Text style there, but that's all that's there right now. I want to keep the Annotative Text style, I might want to use that later. So I've got there, Shapes, Line Type Shapes; Multiline styles Ð there's a Multiline style there, Example. We used that Multiline style to create our house, remember? I don't want to get rid of that because it gives me that cavity wall width. Line Types: Dash, Gridline Ð I need all of those to work with my drawing. Layers, there - there are all my Layers there for example. Topography OLD, do you remember that one? We don't need that any more so I purge it: Purge this item. As you can see it's very, very easy to use. It's very, very easy to see what is going on. So I'm going to close that now and what I would normally do then is save my drawing. So as you can see, Purge, a very useful tool for tidying up items that you just don't need in your drawing anymore. It also reduces the drawing file size so if you've got a large, cumbersome drawing with lots of blocks, lots of layers, use Purge. Lose the bits that you don't need. You'll notice as well, look, that little. just there is gone. That zero-length line has gone in the Purge, as I've purged other objects. That's a new feature available in AutoCAD 2010 only.
