You can edit an External Reference File In Place in your current drawing. You simply select the reference by clicking on it. As you can see there, it's highlighted, it's gone dashed. Notice as well now I go to the External Reference Tab on the ribbon. So you can see that I can edit the reference in place, I can open the reference drawing in a separate window, I can create a clipping boundary, remove a clicking boundary or just go to my External References Palette. So if I click there, that brings up the palette that we looked at previously. I'm going to close the palette and what I'm going to do is click on Edit Reference In Place. Now what happens here is it allows me to identify that reference and you can see there that it displays the reference selected for in-placed editing plus any other information except maybe that I've got a reference of a reference, for example. If I OK that now, the XREF selected references a previous-released drawing file format. So what it's telling me there is it's an older file version. It might be an older AutoCAD file. If the edits are saved back to the XREF, the reference drawing file will be updated to the current-release drawing format. Be aware of that because what happens there is if you change that release file, what happens is somebody might be using an older version of AutoCAD to edit the XREF and they won't be able to open the XREF anymore. So we click on OK there and notice now everything is faded apart from the XREF file and notice now we've got more options here on the actual External Reference Tab. So you can see there I can save any changes I make, I can discard any changes I make, I can add to the working set or remove from the working set. What I'm going to do here is just click on some lines and maybe just tweak a few of the splines a little bit going that direction, that one can go in perhaps that direction, that one can come here like that. If I escape that one then and I'll take that one from there to the end point there. So I've made some changes to the contour lines there. What I need to do now though is I need to go back and save those changes. So I need to go here to the Edit Reference Panel, save the changes, All Reference Edits will be Saved. When I OK that, now that information has been saved to the XREF. So if I now go to Open and I open up my Topography file, so let's go and find that Topography file. It is there. When I open it up you can see the changes there that have been made to those splines there that represent the contour lines. So you can see that I've edited that file and it's even gone back when I open up the original drawing, the Topography drawing. So be aware of those changes but more importantly, be aware of the release version when you make those changes. So as you can see there, our changes have been made in place and they are immediately reflected back to the reference drawing.
