Drawing Objects / Boundaries
Subtitles of the Movie
In this exercise we're going to utilize the Boundary Command, and what we're going to do is create Boundaries using our landscaping Spline, our hardstanding Polyline, and our pond Spline, and we're going to create Boundaries to calculate the area of turf, or sod, that we need in the grassed area around the pond and the hardstanding. Now you'll notice I've frozen off the Gradient Fills that represent the grass, the hardstanding, and the pond purely for clarity. Now, what we do have, though, is an issue here. Watch. If I go to the Boundary Command here, which is on the Draw Panel, click on the fly-out there and pin out the Fly-out Panel, there's the Boundary Command there. If I click on Boundary now I'm going to switch on Island Detection and my object type I want to be a Polyline. If I now do a Pick Points and go and pick a point inside my Spline here that represents my pond, and I then press Enter to confirm, I get an error: the Polyline boundary could not be derived. That's because it's a Spline. But what I can do is I can actually use my PLINECONVERTMODE and convert that Spline to a Polyline. I don't want to create a region yet, so I say No to that. So, plineconvertmode again, like we did previously and what we do is we make sure that PLINECONVERTMODE is set to zero, or do we? That's Lines. We've got a nice curvy pond there. I think we need to use Arcs, so we put it down as 1, which is normally the default anyway. Press Enter. Now, we do pe, Polyline Edit like so, and we select the Polyline. Do I want to turn it into one? Yes, I do, so I press Enter to accept the Y for Yes. Precision I'm going to leave it at 2 and press Enter. Notice it retains its curves. I press Enter to come out of Polyline Edit, and that is now a closed Polyline. Let's do the same here with the landscaping Spline. So again, pe, Polyline Edit, select the Polyline like so; do I want to turn it into one, Yes I do, so I press Enter to accept the Y for Yes, Precision 2, Enter again. That is now also a Polyline, so I press Enter to come out of Polyline Edit, so that is now also a Polyline. Now I can create my Boundaries, so I go to Boundary here, make sure that I've got Island detection switched on, Object type is Polyline, I click on Pick Points here, and I pick my hardstanding, pick an internal point in there. See the boundary? Pick an internal point in there, see the boundary, Enter to confirm. It's actually placing those on the current Layer, which is the Wipeouts Layer, so you can see that there's one there, see? It's a polyline on the Wipeouts Layer. Here though there's also a Polyline on the Wipeouts Layer, so that's the current Layer. That's no problem. What we're going to do is we're going to convert these actual Boundaries onto a Boundaries Layer shortly. Now I need to just do this one here. So what I need to do is Boundary, Island detection on, Object type Polyline, click on OK, pick a point inside the grassed area like so. Notice it finds the Boundary for me and it picks up the islands, the hardstanding and the pond. I press Enter and I've now got a Boundary there as well. So you can see now if I hover over that I've got a complete Boundary that gives me the area there of the sod or the turf that I need. But we're going to convert that into Regions in the next exercise.
