Drawing Objects / PLINECONVERTMODE

Subtitles of the Movie

The PLINECONVERTMODE Variable in AutoCAD allows you to use the Polyline Edit Command on Splines and convert Splines back to a Polyline. So what we can do here is we can look at our PLINECONVERTMODE variable first, so we type that in, so it's pline, pline for Polyline, and then convertmode, like so. It's a long variable to remember, so remember Polyline, pline, and then convertmode. That's the easiest way. When you press Enter there you can see that the new value, the PLINECONVERTMODE at the moment is zero. Now zero is linear, so when you convert a Spline to a Polyline the Polyline will have linear segments, it will have lines as the segments. The default value is actually 1, like that. When I put 1 in and press Enter what will happen now is when I convert that Spline, let's say, this one here for my landscaping, to a Polyline it will actually have Arc segments. So let's test that theory out now by using Polyline Edit. So I type in pe, for Polyline Edit, and press Enter, and what I do now is I select the Polyline, in this case my Spline, and it prompts me: Do I want to turn it into one? If I accept the Y there by pressing Enter that is now converted, or has it? I've got to specify a precision. I'm going to specify a precision of 2, like so, and you can have any value between 1 and 99. If I press Enter now it takes me back into Polyline Edit, I press Enter again to come out of Polyline Edit and that has converted that Spline into a Polyline. If I hover over it now you'll see it's a Polyline. When I click on it you'll see that I've got lots of little grips there indicating that each segment now has its grips at the beginning and the end. If I zoom in a little bit and click on one of these grips and pull it out like so look, you can see it's made up of arcs. That's because the PLINECONVERTMODE was set to 1. So you can see that I'm dragging Arcs around, yeah? Like so, with my Polyline. I'm going to hit Escape now and hit Escape again to deselect and roll back a little bit, and what I'm going to do I'm just going undo a few steps. So you'll notice, read the Command Line there, undo my Zoom, undo Grip Edits, undo my Zoom again, and I'm going to undo the Polyline Edit there, can you see that? So, if I now hover over it now it's back to being a Spline again. So if I now type plineconvertmode again and press Enter and this time select a value of zero for linear segments and press Enter and then I type pe for Polyline Edit and press Enter again and select my Spline using Polyline Edit; do I want to turn it into one? Yes I do. It becomes a Polyline once I've specified the precision. So I'll use 2 like I did before and press Enter. I then press Enter again now to come out of Polyline Edit and now if I hover over it it's a Polyline again. Click on it, there are the grips again. But if I zoom in now and click on one of those grips and pull it away, look. You can see it's made up of Line Segments instead of Arc Segments. It's a very useful tool in AutoCAD 2010, the PLINECONVERTMODE variable. It allows you to convert Splines into Polylines and edit them like so, accordingly. So, that is now a Polyline that I can edit using Polyline Edit.
