Introduction / New in AutoCAD 2010 pt. 2

Subtitles of the Movie

Welcome to the second part of What's New in AutoCAD 2010. Now let's have a look at some of the new features available to you in AutoCAD 2010 that will be beneficial to you to allow you to be more effective and more productive. You still have the Quick Access Toolbar here at the top of the screen. As you can see I'm highlighting the Icons there. In AutoCAD 2009 you couldn't really customize the Quick Access Toolbar. If you click on this little fly-out here you can see that there is now a customized Quick Access Toolbar menu allowing you to Add Commands, More Commands, you can show the Menu Bar, the original pull-down Menu Bar from previous versions of AutoCAD and you can also show the Quick Access Toolbar below the Ribbon as well. So as you can see there, there's lots more new features there in the Quick Access Toolbar. We will cover those later on in this Course. Now there are lots of other new tools available as well. If we look on the Ribbon and look at our Insert tab here, you'll see that on the Insert tab now it's been process-driven. I can insert Blocks, Attributes, References; I can Import Data; I can Add actual Field Data; I can Link and Embed; but more importantly you have a new one here. What used to be Content Search is now Autodesk Seek here, so I can Seek Objects on the Autodesk Seek website. What I've also got is a new Parametric tab available to me in AutoCAD 2010, it's just here, and we'll look at Parametric more throughout the Course, but to give you an example I've got two lines here. I've got a horizontal line and an angled line. I want that angled line to always be parallel to this horizontal line here, so I use the Parallel Geometric Constraint here, I select the line I want to be parallel to first, I then select this end, here, of this line, and it's automatically parallel as you can see. And it's used this Endpoint here of this line as the Data Point and brought the line down. They will always be parallel now because they have this Geometric Constraint here, the Parallel Geometric Constraint. Now, something you may recognize if you're a slightly older, more seasoned AutoCAD user is the Express Tools tab here. Express Tools have been around in AutoCAD a long time and a lot of Express Tools have been developed by individuals or organizations. One of my favorites is this one here on the Text Panel: it's Arc Aligned Text. I select it, I select the Arc that I want to place the Text around, and the dialog box appears, so I'm going to change my Font here to Verdana and I'm going to put text in here that says: This is Arc Aligned Text. So, a little bit of text like so. This is a metric drawing so I'm going to give the text a Height of 6 millimeters and the Offset of the Text from the Arc will be 3 millimeters. When I click on OK what will happen is, it thinks about it for a few seconds because it's actually calculating the curve of that text along the Arc. So for a first-time run it might hover and chug a little bit like this. Don't worry about that. It's just AutoCAD calculating the text around the Arc. So as you can see, perfectly aligned text around my Arc. This ends Part 2 of What's New in AutoCAD 2010. What we'll do now in this basic 2D Concepts Course is take you through all the processes that you need to become proficient in AutoCAD 2010.
