Autodesk AutoCAD 2010: Basic 2D Concepts Tutorials

Drafting Settings / Quick Properties (QP)

Subtitles of the Movie

There is a new feature both in AutoCAD 2009 and AutoCAD 2010 that displays the Properties of an object, but on the screen. It saves me having to right-click and bring up the Shortcut Menu and go to Properties. It's called Quick Properties, or QP for short. It's actually this Button down here on the Status Bar. And if I switch on Quick Properties by clicking on it and highlighting it in blue, if I now select this line here you'll notice that my Quick Properties Palette appears on the screen. Now you'll notice there that it gives me Color, Layer, Line Type, and Length. So, I can change the Color very quickly by clicking there and changing it to red. And you'll notice the color changes automatically on the screen. I can then quickly close my Quick Properties like so, hit Escape to deselect that line, and the job is done. So, the Quick Properties is very quick and fast and easy. It's on-screen again. It's this heads-up display ethic that Autodesk is following with their products. So again, I can click on this line here and because I've got QP switched on you'll notice there I can change the color of that line if I want to as well to red, like so, it changes to red. I hit Escape to deselect. Now you'll notice there that the Quick Properties Palette appeared upwards and to the right. If I right-click over QP here and go to Settings I can change that in the Dialog Box. So, the Quadrant there is Top Right and the Distance is 50 in pixels, away from where I select the object. How about I go for Top Left, and change that and click on OK? Now when I click on an object it appears Top Left. As you can see, it's changed position. So again know I can change the color, and I'll change that to blue, and you'll notice the line changes to blue. I close the Quick Properties, I hit Escape to deselect. I click on this line here, again, notice it's Top Left this time. I change the color to blue, and as you can see there, very quick, very easy. Close the Quick Properties, hit Escape. Now, what I can do as well is, if I select this line here the Quick Properties comes up again, but what happens if I want to customize what appears in the Quick Properties Palette? Well, I hit this Button here: Customize. And what this does is it actually takes me into the AutoCAD CUIx file, and you'll notice there, Quick Properties is there and I can edit what's going on over here in the Quick Properties. I can add: Commands, I can add anything I want to there. I've got Color, Layer, Line Type, and so on. So, I can actually change what I want in the CUIx file as against what appears in the Quick Properties Palette. Now, I'm not going to change it in this particular case because I don't want to, but I'm just showing you there that you can adapt and customize your Quick Properties Palette. So I'm going to Cancel that there, come into the Drawing Area, switch QP off for the moment, and as you can see, Quick Properties, another quick and easy way of being productive, effective, in AutoCAD 2010.
