Drafting Settings / ORTHO
Subtitles of the Movie
Orthographic Projection in AutoCAD 2010 is controlled by the ORTHO Command in the Drafting Settings. It's this Icon down here, this Button here, on the Status Bar in the Drafting Settings. Click on ORTHO and that will switch it on. You'll also notice that if you've got POLAR switched on it automatically turns it off. This is because you cannot have ORTHO and POLAR on at the same time. Now, Orthographic Projection ties you in now to purely vertical and horizontal lines. It's very useful when it's combined with Snap and Grid. So, let's switch on SNAP and GRID as well. Now, what I want to do here is I want to work with my drawing that we've built up over the last few exercises and we're going to zoom in on this area here, so I'm just rolling upwards on the wheel mouse to zoom in slightly. Now what I want to do here is I want to draw a vertical line, but I don't want to deviate. So, for example, without ORTHO on Ð let's switch it off for a second down here on the Status Bar Ð if I just click on Line now and maybe use this Snap point here I could accidentally end up over here, like that, and the line is then at an angle. If I right-click, though, and just use Undo there on the Shortcut Menu to undo that last Line Segment, the first point of my line is correct, but I want it to be exactly vertical. So I go down to ORTHO and switch it on. Look. I can now only go horizontally or vertically. So I come down here, left-click there, there's my line that I want, and Enter to finish. So, you can see there that it works extremely effectively. Let's have a look at creating both a vertical and a horizontal line now. So I'm going to go back to the Line Command. ORTHO is on, so I pick that Snap point there, left-click, and as I come down now, you can see that I can only do horizontal or vertical lines, so there's a vertical line there. Left-click on that Snap point, and as I drag across now, look. I can't go anywhere apart from horizontal. So, I'm going to come out to that Snap point there, and I'm going to left-click again, and Enter to finish. Let's do that one more time. So. We've got SNAP, GRID, and ORTHO switched on. We're using the Line Command, and we're utilizing our Snap points and our Grid, so I click on the Snap point, go upwards, I left-click on that Snap point. I can only do, as you can see there, look, horizontal or vertical lines. So, I'm coming out to this Snap point here, I left-click, and Enter to finish. So you can see there that ORTHO is extremely effective there at maintaining vertical and horizontal lines. You can also use ORTHO for example, when you're copying, you're pasting, moving, rotating. It's a very effective tool in your Drafting Settings in AutoCAD 2010.
