It may be that you're working on a project that is confidential to the client. It may be military or involve issues that may affect national security, for example. A lot of military contracts people have to go through things such as the Official Secrets Act in the United Kingdom before they can actually work on these type of projects. Now, if you're working on these type of projects, there are two ways of securing your drawings. Now, what we need to do is go to our Options Dialog Box, which is a simple right click and then Options on the Default Shortcut Menu there and we go to the Open and Save Tab. Now, down at the bottom left there you've got Security Options. Notice I've got the options to Display Digital Signature Information. Now, this drawing won't have a digital signature because I don't personally have one to apply to it. But if I go to the Security Options, I have the option of applying a password or a phrase to opening the drawing. I also have the option of applying a digital signature. Now, at the moment there is no digital signature available on my computer system. So I'm going to say no there. We'll look at that in a moment and I'll go back to the Password Tab. Now, the password I'm going to apply to open this drawing is going to be autocad in lowercase. So I apply that in there. I'm going to also encrypt my drawing properties. That way when they're encrypted, using the Microsoft-based Cryptographic Provider there, what it allows me to do is stop people hacking into the password-protected drawing. Advanced Options here; what I can do is change which encryption method I use. I'm not going to worry about that too much. There's lots of technical information in there that I don't think you need to worry about at the moment. So I'll just ok the Microsoft one for the moment. Now, that's all set up so I OK it. Now I need to re-enter the password to open the drawing. That is autocad in lowercase. Don't forget; if you lose or forget the password, it cannot be recovered. You must keep a list of passwords and their corresponding drawing names in a safe place. A lot of companies do this. They have a backup such as a Word document or an Excel spreadsheet. It's normally stored in the company safe. You'll notice that drawing passwords are not case sensitive so it can be upper or lowercase or a mixture of the two. So I've OK'd that. Notice I'm now in the drawing. So I'm going to OK that again now but before I do that, let's go back and just quickly touch on these digital signatures. I don't actually have one and I can't apply one to this drawing so what I'll do, I'll just quickly do an Alt Tab and I'm going to go to Internet Explorer. Now, here is VeriSign. They're a well-known provider of digital signatures. You do have to purchase a digital signature and what it allows people to do is have their own individual signature applied to their drawings. So if you're a company, you apply your digital signature to your drawings as proof that they are yours. But also what that means is people can check whether your digital signature is valid. And if it is valid, you're seen as a reputable company providing reputable drawings. Let's quickly hop back there to AutoCAD. Now, this drawing has got the password autocad in lowercase. So if I OK that now and close my drawing like so, notice it's 07 Drawing Security there? So I close the drawing, save the changes. Yes, thank you. And I've saved that password change. So if I now go to Open, there's my drawing security drawing there. If I go to open that now, I have to put the password in to open it, which is autocad like so. I click on OK and then drawing opens. It's that easy to set up a password. If you have confidential or sensitive information on your drawings, use a password. Better still, if you've got a digital signature, use that as well as your password.
