The mouse is a very useful tool for using Realtime Zoom and Realtime Pan in AutoCAD, its been available in AutoCAD for a number of versions, not just AutoCAD 2009. If you have a standard obstacle wheel mouse and you're using your Microsoft settings for that mouse in your control panel in Windows. What you'll find is when you roll the wheel upwards you will Zoom in and each notch of your wheel you're basically making everything ten percent bigger. So each notch as you can see I got ten percent bigger then and ten percent bigger again and you can see the partitions getting bigger and bigger. If I roll back on the wheel mouse I'm coming back by ten percent and everything is becoming ten percent smaller. There is a little cheat there as well with the Realtime Zoom on the wheel of the mouse, as if you position your crosshair over the object you want to Zoom in and roll upwards on the mouse that particular object underneath the crosshairs becomes the center of the Zoom. So I can zoom in on any object, I've just zoomed in on the phone, I can zoom in on the chair, it's a nice little trick to use when your zooming in and out very quickly. Realtime Pan is also very easy to use if your wheel on your mouse can also be utilized as a third button by holding down the wheel you will find that Pan kicks in and if you keep the wheel held down you can Pan around in the drawing as well. Now these functions, as soon as I release the mouse button there, the wheel button, you'll notice that I'm back with my AutoCAD crosshairs. But these functions are only available if you have a wheel mouse, so what you're looking for here is a mouse with a wheel that acts as a button, these functions will only work if you have a mouse that has that functionality.
