The User Interface - AutoCAD 2009 Style! / Shortcut Menu
Subtitles of the Movie
AutoCAD has a right hand mouse button, Content Sensitive Shortcut Menu; notice the Shortcut Menu for short. When the right hand mouse is clicked in AutoCAD as you can see a Shortcut Menu appears, this is the default Shortcut Menu that is invoked when no commands are in progress or selected. As you can see there are lots of different options available to you. New features such as Steering Wheels and the Action Recorder in AutoCAD 2009 are available on the Shortcut Menu. I can play and record any actions I need to on the Action recorder and I can also go down and run AutoCAD options and set my options within AutoCAD. This allows me to set things such as Display, Open and Save; Plot and Publish, System Settings, User Preferences and I can also go into Right Click Customization. Now this is in your AutoCAD Options and notice it allows you to edit your Shortcut menus. If I click on Right Click Customization I can change the settings of my right hand mouse button, at the moment they display the Shortcut Menu, but I can change the settings as you can see in this particular dialog box. I can also turn on a Time Sensitive Right Click; a Quick Click allows the right hand mouse button to act as the Enter key. If I hold down the right hand mouse button for longer it will invoke the Shortcut Menu. I can click on OK in Options and the settings for my right hand mouse button are now set. Let's now look at some of the AutoCAD commands and see how the Shortcut Menu performs within those commands. I've clicked on the Polyline Command and I'm going to start drawing an AutoCAD polyline on the screen. As you can see I'm drafting and using Dynamic Input to enter distances and angles. So there's the first part of my polyline and as you can see there I'm going down and checking my Drafting Settings, I'm switching Poly Tracking on or off there just to make sure that I can use utilize Poly tracking to make sure that, that line is at 0 degrees. If I now drag the cursor downwards and right click though, I'm in the Polyline Shortcut Menu and I can select ARC. I can now place an ARC as part of my polyline. I'm now going to draw another ARC or I can right click and again notice that the Shortcut Menu is different and allows me to go back to the line settings within the Polyline command. I can now use my Object Snap tracking to ensure that I get the exact point underneath my previous part of my Polyline, I then right click and go to ARC, drag the ARC out to the end of the Polyline there and I now have a finished Polyline. I'm going to close and once that polyline is closed I have a finished object on my drawing ready to go. Notice no keyboard input was required; I was using the right hand Shortcut Menu all the time. I'm now drawing another Polyline utilizing my Object Snaps and as you can see I'm going from point to point and if I right click again now I can place different objects or I can undo a segment if required. Notice upon clicking on Undo it goes back to the last point selected. I can now change my mind and position that line in a different place and as you can see I'm drafting the Polyline through my existing Polyline to give me the shape.
