The User Interface - AutoCAD 2009 Style! / Ribbon
Subtitles of the Movie
We're now going to look at the Ribbon in AutoCAD 2009, this is the large area with all of the icons at the top of the screen and as you can see it follows a process flow rather then just having a group of pull-down menus as per previous versions of AutoCAD. Notice the Draw Panel in the Ribbon, if I click on it, it expands and if I click on the Pin there I can hold that particular part of the panel in place, so when I'm drawing I can see all of my draw commands. I can expand the Modify Panel as well and I can also pin that out to. Now I can pin any of these panels out from the Ribbon and unpin them at any time and as you can see they recede back into the Ribbon when their unpinned. In the Utilities Panel you'll notice that I have items such as Zoom Extents, but also when I click on the Down Arrow there it expands out to all of the Zoom commands that are available to me in AutoCAD. If I look at the Blocks & References tab at the top of the screen now, when I click on the tab you will see that the Ribbon changes to different panels so I can now work with blocks and you'll notice that I have attributes, I have reference files, I have import and export files and also data if I link to it external data sources. Notice in the Reference Panel there I can also clip the references that I bring into the drawing. On the Annotate tab you're annotating a drawing; hence you have Text Panels, Dimension Panels, Multi-Layer Panels. You can also insert tables, Markups and any information. I can also minimize to panel titles so now when I hover over the panel titles they appear on the screen, very similar to Auto Hide in the palettes in AutoCAD. I double click on the Icon again and I'm back to my panel view on the Ribbon.
