Drafting Settings / DUCS
Subtitles of the Movie
We're now going to look at the Dynamic UCS setting in AutoCAD or DUCS for short. Again this is controlled and switched ON and off by the Dynamic UCS option here on the Status Bar. If I right click and switch the icons option off it's controlled by the DUCS buttons, the D-U-C-S button. I'm going to switch the icons back on again. Now looking at the environment that we're working in albeit this is a basic 2D concepts course we're working in a 3D environment. Now this can also be controlled in a 2D environment if required, but to actually get the idea of the Dynamic UCS its much easier to show it or demonstrate it in a 3D drawing like this. So the first thing I'm going to is I'm actually going to go into my 3D workspace, this is controlled by the Workspace button here on the Status Bar and you get 3 default workspaces in AutoCAD 2009, 2D Drafting and Annotation, 3D modeling and AutoCAD classic. I'm going to select 3D Modeling and you'll see the screen change it takes a few seconds and what it's doing is its setting the settings now for a 3D working environment. You'll notice that the Ribbon has completely changed, I have my 3D Modeling Panel, my Draw Panel, my Solar Edit Panel and what we're going to do here is I'm going to do something very, very basic. At the moment the UCS is down here as you can see the X, Y, I'm going to place that UCS Dynamically on the top face here of our 3D solid. What I'm going to is just perform a very, very, very simple circle, center, radius command and I get asked to specify the center point for my circle. If I hover over the edge down here like this, can you see the actual face highlights and if I then just position somewhere on that face and left click you'll see that my circle can now be placed on that face. Now what I may be doing there is I may be building up that 3D Model with that circle to perform something like an Extrude. So if I now Extrude that circle by highlighting it, there it is there, I left click and I right click to Confirm and there we are. I'm going to make that 250 high and I've placed another object on top of my 3D object that is what Dynamic UCS is all about, it allows you to work on any face for 3D object. You can also place on a 2D object if necessary.
