Drafting Settings / OTRACK
Subtitles of the Movie
We're now going to look at Object Snap Tracking in AutoCAD. Now we're going to use our office environment drawing again as we've been using before and as you can see we have our first office nicely placed there with our chair, our desk, our workstation and our phone. What we're going to use this time is Object Snap Tracking to position that workstation, all of the objects, the computer, the chair, the telephone and the desk in the center of the office of the right there. Now we're going to use two Object Snap Tracking points. Now the Object Snap Tracking points we're going to use are going to be this point here on the end of the window there and this point here on the other end of the window thus producing a point roughly here in the center of the screen. Now what we're going to do first is make sure that we have the appropriate Object Snaps on, so we're going to right click over the Object Snap Icon at the bottom of the screen and go to settings. Now also in our Object Snap tab we have Object Snap Tracking so we'll make sure that is switched ON. We'll also make sure that Object Snap is on, in order to utilize Object Snap Tracking and we'll make sure that the appropriate Object Snap Modes are on that we need. In this case I've switched ON End Point, Mid Point, Center, Node, Intersection and Extension. This is not obviously the full exhaustive list Object Snaps, but these are only the ones that I need at any given time. I click on OK and everything is now switched ON. Notice down at the bottom on the Status Bar the Object Snap is on and the Object Snap Tracking is on. Now what we're going to do now is we're going to select our objects that we want to move. I'm going to select my computer, my phone, my desk and my chair, now as I said previously these are AutoCAD blocks so their all objects rather then lines and ARCs making up the objects. Now what we're going to do here is we're going to move these objects by right clicking and selecting Move on the Shortcut Menu. I could also use Move on the Modify Panel of the Ribbon if I wanted to, I don't have to because it's on the Shortcut Menu as well. I click on Move and I'm prompted for a base point where I'm moving from. I'm going to use this corner of the desk here, this End Point Snap here, so I left click on the End Point Snaps and notice we're using Object Snaps as well. Clicking on the End Point Snap I move across into the office over here. Now I don't have a point to move to as a second point yet, but what I do is I hover my Crosshair over that End Point Snap there, so that the End Point Snap Rating appears on the Dynamic Input there. I then hover over this End Point Snap here, now because I've also got Polar Tracking and I can drag along the extension line at a specific angle as soon as I get an intersection of those two points, can you see the intersection snap appears and I now left click and my desk, chair, computer and phone are now exactly central in that office. Now this is obviously not an ideal position because when we look we can see that the desk is blocking the door or opening in our partitions. Now the simply solution to this is we have an Undo Command in AutoCAD. So I can easily Undo what I've just done, its exactly the same as any other Microsoft based product but its slightly different in the AutoCAD 2009 interface. It's up here above the Ribbon, there's the Undo there, I click on Undo and that takes my furniture back into the other office. Now what I've done there is I've tested the positioning of my furniture to see whether it would fit centrally in one of the partitioned offices.
