Drafting Settings / OSNAP

Subtitles of the Movie

We're now going to look at Object Snaps in AutoCAD. Object Snaps allow you tOSNAP accurately to specific precise points on a particular AutoCAD object. Now if we look at our drawing we've moved along a little bit now, we have our partitions in place we're now occupying our office area with furniture. So you'll notice there we have a desk, a chair, a computer workstation and a telephone. Now the benefit you have with AutoCAD is with selection you can select all of these objects to move at once. Now you'll also notice in the top left corner of the top left office space there as segmented by the office partition there is a pink, what they call point or reference. This is referenced by the Node Object Snap. Now the benefit we have here is the top left corner of the desk can be positioned exactly on that node Object Snap. So using our Object Snap settings we're going to utilize the Node Snap and the top left end point of the desk and combining those with the Move Command we can then place our desk, our chair, our computer and our telephone in the arrangement in the top left office space. Let's do that now. We're going to go to the Modify Panel here in the Ribbon and the Move Command is available on this particular panel. Click on the Arrow here and you'll see that you have various options available to you. We need to find the Move Command, so what we do is we look at the icons here, if we hover over them we get a Tooltip, Move is this one here. It moves an object a specified distance in a specified direction. We're going to use Grid Snaps and Object Snaps, in this case our Object Snaps and other tools to move the objects with precision. We click on the Icon in the panel, come into the drawing area and we are prompted to select Objects. We place the pit box over each object, one, two, three, four, so there's our four objects. Now these objects have all been selected, one by one and each of the AutoCAD entities making up those objects have been made into what they call an AutoCAD Block. So the desk is one object, the chair is one object and so on. We will cover blocks later in this particular AutoCAD course; we're using them for simplicity and ease of use at the moment. After we've selected the objects we want, notice on the Command Line it prompts us with a total four so that we can see that we've selected our four objects, we right click on the Mouse or press Enter on the keyboard and it will ask us to specify a base point. This is where we are moving from, we'll cover the Move Command in more detail later, but utilizing our End Point Object Snap here. Now the good thing is we can switch these Object Snaps on and off within a command by going down to the Object Snap Icon here on the Status Bar. If I right click over the Object Snap Icon I get all of my Object Snaps appearing on a right hand Shortcut Menu, this is only available in AutoCAD 2009. Later versions of AutoCAD, if I go to settings, I can switch on my Object Snaps. We need to make sure that Object Snap is on here in the Object Snap tab and we need to make sure that End Point Snap is switched ON and we need to make sure that Node is on as well. We're going to use the End Point and the Node here to move our desk, chair, computer and phone arrangement. We click on OK and you'll see Resuming Move Command appear on the Command Line. Our base point as before is our End Point Snap here on the top left corner of the desk. You'll see now as you move the Crosshair our objects move with us because we've now specified our base point. We now move the arrangement into the office and if you hover over the Pink Node Snap, the Node Snap appears there on the Dynamic Input for us to let us know that, that is the Node Snap and it's available. If we left click on the Node Snap the arrangement is now placed in the office. As you can see that is one usage of twOSNAPs. If we go back to the settings here, right click on Object Snap and go to settings you can see that there many other Object Snaps available and these are going to be used as we go through the AutoCAD 2D Basic Concepts Course. Click on OK to Close your Drafting Settings dialog box and we have now finished this particular part of section three.
