Drafting Settings / GRID
Subtitles of the Movie
Staying with the same example that we used earlier with the square on the 2.5 unit Snap Gird what we're going to do now is switch the Grid Mode on as well. This is controlled down here again on the Status Bar by the Grid Display icon, again if I right click and Select the Use Icons Option, it shows the named buttons as per previous versions of AutoCAD. If I switch Grid on by clicking on the Grid button you'll see the grid appear on the screen. If I right click and go back to Icons, I can go back to the Icon Setting there and also if I right click over Icon or the Bastion I can go to Settings and it brings up my Drafting Settings Dialog Box again. Now notice Snap is not on at the moment because I switched it Off earlier, I'm going to switch Snap On at a Snap at Spacing at 2.5 as previously. However I'm also going to make sure that Grid is switched ON here and I'm going to change the Grid Spacing to 5 in each case. So if I hit the tab key again notice it updates each field for me and I can have a major line every 6 units as well if I wish. This allows me to have sub-gridlines as well. I'm also going to make sure that the Snap Type here is set to Grid Snap; this will be covered later on. I'm going to click on OK now and you'll notice now that the grid points as I move around are set to 5, but however I can still snap every 2.5 you'll see. So if I draw another line now and I draw it from this End Point Snap here as I move to each Snap Point, it is 2.5 still. Yeah, so what happens here is I can draw like so and go back to there and finish the Line Command, so I know that, that square there is also 2.5 units square. If I zoom out slightly you'll hopefully see some of the points on the grid there, they are at 5 points each. Now what I'm going to do is change both settings so you can see a denser grid with smaller increments on the Snap Points. I right click over either the Snap All Grid icon and I go to Settings, the Grid X Spacing now I'm going to change to 2.5 and I'm going to hit the tab key to set the Grid Y Spacing to the same. Make sure that the grid is on and in the snap area here I'm going to change the increments here to 1.25, exactly half of the grid spacing and again I'm going to hit the tab key and that updates the Snap Y Spacing value as well. Again make sure that Snap is on and also just to be on the safe side make sure that equal X and Y spacing is switched ON as well. When you click on OK now, you'll see that you have a denser grid, so now notice I can snap between grid points. So if I start drawing some lines now you'll see the difference, I'm now working to half, 1.25 each time so therefore the square is half the size. I can again click on the Line Command and if I go from this End Point Snap here, 1.25, again 1.25, 1.25 and again 1.25. So now the snap grid is actually set to 1.25 in the X and Y direction but as your Grid Display showing the dots is set to 2.5. This can be used for areas that need regular spacing, a typical example of this would be an office layout where you need corridors between desks, between partitions that are of a regular width. Also you may be drawing regular mechanical parts that need regular sizing, again if you regular increments you can set your Grid and Snap settings to those increments and work effectively and quickly, knowing that the increments are accurate.
