Drafting Settings / SNAP
Subtitles of the Movie
The Snap Function in AutoCAD allows you to create an invisible or visible grid of Snap Points at regular intervals in the X and Y directions. It is controlled by this icon here, the Snap Mode, if I click on Snap Mode that will switch Snap On as you can see on the Command Line and if I right click over the button I can go into Settings. Now you'll notice when I click on Settings, it brings up the Drafting Settings dialog box on the Snap and Grid tab you'll see there and currently Snap is on because I've switched it on. A Snap X and Y spacing at the moment is naught point 5, I'm going to change that to 2.5 and if I hit the tab key the Snap Y Spacing updates automatically as well and you'll notice there I've got equal X and Y spacing ticked, that also allows for equal X and Y spacing here and constrains it so as I tab that and I OK it, now as you can see when I move the cursor around the screen, can you see it snapping to each invisible point? Snap is combined with the Grid Command which we'll cover in the next section and you'll see how they work together. But the whole idea of this is when you are drafting now, if I click on the Line Command and move to a point when I go to the next point, notice the distance is exactly 2.5 there in the distance box on the Dynamic Input. If I click on the next point I then move down here, notice that distance is also 2.5. So each point is exactly 2.5 units apart and then I'll close the Line Command, I now know that is a square which each side being 2.5. Notice as well older versions of AutoCAD, if I right click on the Snap Mode here and go to the Use Icons options and click on it to Switch Off the tick there I go back to the buttons with the names of each function on them as per previous versions of AutoCAD. So there's Snap, Snap is off, Snap is on. I can also right click and I can also switch it off on the right hand mouse click there by clicking Off and you'll notice Snap is off again and I now have a free mouse movement again when I move the cursor around the screen. As I stated earlier Snap can be combined with the Grid Command and if I just right click over Grid here and go to Settings you will see that it brings you up in the same Snap and Grid tab here in the Drafting Settings dialog box and you can switch on Snap and switch on Grid in the same dialog box. We'll now move onto the next section which covers Grid and you'll see how Snap and Grid work together.
