Basic Drawing Skills / Object Snap Tracking

Subtitles of the Movie

In this drawing we're going to use Object Snap Tracking to create a side view of the part that's already displayed on the screen. No what we need to do is we need to make sure that the following drafting settings are turned on. We need Polar Tracking, down here. We need Object Snap and we need Object Snap Tracking. Dynamic UCS we don't need, so we just click on that to turn it off, but what we do need are certain Object Snaps switched on. So let's right click over O Snap and go to settings, and in the dialog box there we're going to do a clear all and we're going to make sure that Object Snap is on at the top and Object Snap Tracking is on as well and then the snaps that we're going to use are going to be End Point, Mid Point, Center and Intersection and Extension and then click on OK. Now what we're going to draw here is a side view that's going to be placed to the right of the existing view. Now Object Snap Tracking allows you to acquire up to 7 tracking points at any given time. We're not going to use 7. That's quite excessive, it's very rare that you will use 7 in one go, but if you do select 7, as soon as you select an eighth Object Snap Tracking Point, the first one that you selected drops off the radar. So can only ever have 7 cumulative Object Snap Tracking Points. So we're going to draw a rectangle first of all. So we go up to the Home Tab, click on our rectangle command in the Draw Panel, then come into the drawing area. Now do you remember what we did with our Extension Snap A little while ago, we're going to do the same again, hover over this End Point Snap and using the Extension Snap and Object Snap Tracking, we drag to the right. Type in a distance of 40 and press enter and our rectangle now forms 40 units away from the object. Now we're going to type in the coordinates now of the other corner point of the rectangle which are going to be 31.75 like so and then Tab or Comma as before and the Y value is going to be 69.85, I then press Enter and there's my rectangle. We're now going to place another rectangle from this rectangle. So I'm going to press the Spacebar to repeat the Rectangle Command and I'm now going to left click on this end point Object Snap here. Drag the rectangle and the other corner point this time is going to be a different value, its going to be 17.53 in the X value box there, again Tab or Comma and then 25.4 press Enter. So we now have a smaller rectangle. We're now going to start drawing some lines and these lines are going to need Object Snap Tracking to be accurate. So I click on the Line Command and come into the drawing area. I'm going to go to this end point snap here, hover over it and left click and my line is going to come off of that corner of the rectangle. I then drag along the 0 degree line using my Polar Tracking and in the Distance Box there I'm going to put in a distance of 90, 90.55 and press Enter. Now this is where we get to the conundrum, I now need a corner down here that lines up with this corner here. So I hover over that end point there and I hover over that end point there. I then drag downwards until I get an intersection, that's what your Object Snap Tracking does, soon as that little pause or intersection appears left click. You now know that the end of that line is coordinated by that point there and that point there. So what we need to do now is we need to start drawing the next part of the line, so I drag to the left along the 180 degree line and I'm going to type in a distance of 46.1 and press Enter and there's the next segment of our line. Now again this is where it gets interesting, I now need to transpose some geometry from the left hand view here. I'm going to hover over this point here which is now going to become an Object Snap Tracking Point. I'm then going to hover over this point here. Now as I drag upwards watch what happens, the 2 Object Snap Tracking Points provide an intersection, you can see that from the tracking lines. I now left click and that's an exact point, accurate to that view on the left. All I need now is to finish off this view so I'm going to hover over this mid point snap here. Now the Object Snap Tracking Point from the view on the left is still current, I haven't selected another 7 points. So if I go up here now and move upwards I still get the intersection with the view on the left hand side. So I now left click there and that goes exactly to there. I then go to the mid point snap, I now want to click on that mid point snap to finish off my drawing. I then press Enter to finish, that is Object Snap Tracking.
