I have made it a point to demonstrate all of the steps taken to create this model and the renderings. I have made many revisions to the model, to the lights and to the materials. I have produced quick renderings for the sole purpose of adjusting materials and lights. I have produced final renderings to serve the needs of a client. As architects we try to be perfect, we hold ourselves to high standards and this is good for our clients. I will be providing this entire model as part of this tutorial. I want you to examine the objects, the materials with their respected properties and the lights with the current settings. I do not want to withhold any trade secrets, I have explained with words and I will allow you to further your understanding as you open this drawing file for yourself. You will notice that the model is not complete, this is by design, when I have to complete a rendering by a certain time, I will focus on that part of the model that needs to be completed, making efficient use of my time. For example I did not complete the back stairs because I did not have to render that part of the model. I have borrowed ideas from Hollywood where they build sets as they are needed, no more, no less. With regards to the furniture and some of the materials I have used resources from certain web sites, this one for example allows you to borrow 3D objects or images for your materials. I have taken the objects, modified the solids and the layers and then inserted the objects as blocks into my model. Feel free to use all of the resources available as I have done with my model, at some point you may have a few 3D objects that you can contribute to sites such as this one. With the Internet we are an architectural community assisting each other, be a giver and a taker in this community of resources. With regards to lights I hope you have learned that lighting does not and cannot be exactly as it is in real life. If photographer is always using the natural light sources available and then placing temporarily lighting where necessary to take the best interior and exterior photographs. I have learned this from my father in law, a retired photographer. When we render we are virtual photographers as we create environments that require us to use all types of lights where you normally would not have any in real life. With renderings we can suspend reality and take advantage of the virtual environment. Be an architect but do not forget that your artistic talents will be required. Allow equal time to create the model, render the model and light the model, if a project takes you ten working days to complete I am also certain that you will need three days to build the model and revise it, 3 days to apply materials and revise the materials and three days to add lights and adjust their properties. That leaves one day which will be just enough time to compose the project for presentation. Do not assume that the timeline will flow from model to materials to lights, you will constantly move back and forth between the 3 stages of this project. Please note as the project flows from one stage to the next the file size of the model continue to increase, also note, the large file size of even the smallest rendering. Be concerned with your storage capacity as you become more involved with 3D projects. You should also be concerned with the organization of your files, I recommend keeping the 2D drawings separate from everything else. I recommend creating a folder for your 3D models and a folder for your renderings. For the images needed to create your materials, I would use a master library folder accessible to all who will be creating renderings, share these images. The more organized you are at the start the more efficient you will be during the process and the easier it will be to complete the project as scheduled. Organization is essential. Later in the tutorial I will show you how to take the files and create an architectural portfolio that tells the story of this project using the 2D and 3D images along with the renderings.
