I would like to demonstrate the revolve command and show you the difference between revolving a polyline and revolving a closed polyline. On the right I have a polyline representing the profile of a wine glass. On the left is the same profile but I am going to offset the polyline and create a closed polyline to revolve, let me begin with this profile. I am going to the dashboard and I am going to select the revolve control, I am going to click on it and I now need to select the objects to revolve. I only want to select this object, so I will pick it and enter. I now need to specify the axis start point, so I am going to zoom out just a little bit and pan and select this end point first, followed by the top end point. I now need to specify the angle of revolution; I would like it to default to 360 so I am going to enter, I have now created a revolved surface, it's a bit difficult to see so I am going to change my visual style and select realistic. I will now come over to the left profile and I am going to create a closed polyline. First I am going to offset a distance of one sixteenth of an inch, selecting the object and offsetting to the outside and now I enter. Changing my layer to the path layer I am going to zoom up here and I am going to draw a line from this end point to that end point and enter. Zooming back out, panning, zooming in, I am going to enter to repeat the line command and I will specify this first point, followed by this next point and enter. I am going to looks very closely and make sure that the end points are touching, because for a closed polyline that is what's necessary. So I can zoom back out and now I am going to use the keyboard shortcut and type PE for polyline edit and enter. I am going to select one of the polyline, then I am going to select join and I am simply going to window everything and then enter and enter one more time and I have successfully created a closed polyline. Now I am going to change the layer back to revolve and go to the revolve control. I need to select the object to revolve, I am going to pick this one and enter. I need to specify the access start point, so I am going to pick this end point and up and then select that end point. Leaving the angle of revolution at 360 I am going to enter, I am going to zoom out and as you can see, I have two objects that look very similar. I am going to close the dashboard and actually zoom out a bit more, right there and I'd like to show you how on the very far right I have the 3D object created with the revolve mesh command, still known to many AutoCAD users as the rev surf command. So what are the similarities and differences between the 3 objects? On the far right is a mesh, it consists of line segments that can only calculate or proximate a curved surface, in the middle is a revolved surface created from an open object, the polyline. On the left is a revolved solid created from a closed object, the closed polyline. I will provide this drawing in the tutorial so you can continue to observe similarities and differences between the 3D objects. Later in the tutorial you will see how and why I use 3D solids instead of surfaces or meshes to create architectural projects.
