Introduction / Architectural Firms & AutoCAD
Subtitles of the Movie
Putting the software aside for a moment I would like to briefly describe the similarities and differences between small, medium and large size firms. Why does this matter? Because your approach to architectural drawing using AutoCAD may vary based on the number of architects and drafters working on a project, I want to point out that it does not need to vary if you take on a large firm mentality. Let's not forget that the reason we use AutoCAD is to save time which translates to saving money for everyone involved in the process. Do you to want save small, medium or large amounts of money. What is a small size firm? It has nothing to do with the size of the office, I am referring to the number of individuals working on an architectural project. A small size firm can be one person working from a home office on one project or up to ten individuals working on multiple projects. A small size firm will work on residential and small size commercial projects. A network is optional if the drawing files are stored in the individual computers and there is no need to share drawing files. A medium size firm has anywhere from 11 to 30 individuals working on projects as teams. The teams may consist of five to ten individuals for project that number can increase as you approach project deadlines. A medium size firm will work on medium to large size residential projects and medium size commercial projects. In this case a network is necessary since the files have to be shared at all times. A large size firm has 31 or more individuals working on projects as teams. In some instances the firm may occupy multiple floors of an office building. It may have additional offices in other parts of the country or in other parts of the world, team sizes will vary based on the size of the architectural projects. You can almost think of a large size firm as a group of small or medium size firms working under one roof. If Cad files are being shared with satellite offices a virtual private network may be necessary and or an FTP server. The numbers I have used here will vary slightly based on the opinions of different architects, but for the purpose of this tutorial they provide you with a basic understanding of how AutoCAD can meet the needs of every architectural firm. In this tutorial I will introduce concepts related to the organization of drawings for large size firms. If you work for a small size firm or if you're self employed the concepts apply. I am only suggesting how you can efficiently produce a good set of working drawings based on my experience with AutoCAD. The benefit of thinking like a large size firm when using AutoCAD is that you have built in flexibility for future projects. Today it can be residential and small size commercial projects, tomorrow it can be skyscrapers.
