Autodesk AutoCAD 2007 for Architects Tutorials

Introduction / From AutoCAD to Adobe Files

Subtitles of the Movie

The architectural community continues to progress and keep pace with standards that drive the need to assist clients in visualizing their future projects. Adobe has created standard formats for the art world. Architectural firms have been doing their best to adopt these standard formats. One of the steps that AutoCAD has finally taken to make the transition easier is the inclusion of a PDF plotter driver. You can now print Adobe PDF documents directly from AutoCAD, making it easier to create standard documents and artistic presentations from architectural drawings. To print a PDF document click on the plot icon, from the plot dialog box select the DWG to PDF plotter configuration file. Then complete the remaining options and click OK. You will be prompted to save the file. When you click save you are creating the PDF documents and let me show you what that looks like. This is the document and you may need to rotate the document. Let me briefly state that printing PDF documents straight from AutoCAD is helpful for two major reasons. First, it makes life much easier when dealing with clients who do not have the ability to open DWG files. Second, if you do not have space for a large size printer in your home office or small size firm you can print an entire set of construction drawings as PDF documents. You can then send the documents to any printing service via CD, email or FTP. Now that you have a PDF document you have a file that is compatible with Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. In the past I have created EPS files of an AutoCAD drawing in order to create color presentations with Illustrator and Photoshop. I will show you how to create an EPS plotter later in this tutorial. For now, I am glad to have another printing option available. This is Illustrator it is a vector based program similar to AutoCAD. This file started out as an AutoCAD drawing, I created a PDF document from the AutoCAD drawing and I was able to open and edit the file using Illustrator, it is now an Illustrator file. As you can see it is much easier to add color and effects to an Illustrator file then a AutoCAD drawing. Photoshop is a raster based program or pixel based program and it is very different from AutoCAD, this is the same AutoCAD drawing only this time I was able to open the PDF document in Photoshop and edit the file. It is not a Photoshop file. As you can see it is a great tool for creating highly sophisticated effects that AutoCAD will never be able to match. To have more collaborative capabilities with PDF documents you may decide to purchase Adobe Acrobat in the near future. To have more color capabilities with presentation drawings, you may decide to purchase Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. I highly suggest the latest Adobe Creative Suite and of course the VTC Adobe tutorials for a complete understanding of the software beyond my architectural perspective in this tutorial.
