At times you will want to select objects that are very close to one another or spread out across the entire drawing, this is where cycling and quick selection of objects will be very useful. I am going to begin with cycling. First I am going to come over here to one of my modify commands, I am going to copy and I need to select objects. Now the objects here are pretty much in the same place or they have points where they really seem to intersect. Now I am going to place my cursor right here and I'd like to pick the blue dash line. Now of course I can pick it here but to demonstrate the cycling option I am going to place it right there and I am going to hold down Shift key and I am going to tap the spacebar. As I am tapping the spacebar it is cycling through the objects that fall within the pick box, as you can see I have one rectangle to the left, a rectangle to the right and of course the dashed blue line. Now this is the line that I'd like to select once it is highlighted I can go ahead and release the Shift key and click on the object with my left mouse button. Now I am going to enter and simply copy it from that location to this location and then tap the escape key. Once again, to demonstrate I am going to select copy, this time I am going to place the cursor at this location and if the pick box has an object going through it then it will be part of the selection as I cycle through my objects. So once again holding down the Shift key, tapping the spacebar once, tapping it again and tapping it again, I am cycling through three objects that fall within the pick box. This is the rectangle that I would like to select so now I can release the Shift key, click on the object with my left mouse button and enter and I'll copy it from this location to that location and I'll tap the escape key. That is how the cycling option works when selecting objects. Now I am going to zoom out right about here and I'd like you to see all of the arcs that I have in the drawing. The arcs are representing the door swings and let's say for example that I would like to select all of the arcs and copy them to another location. Now I can easily go to copy and start picking each one of the arcs individually. That's going to be time consuming so what I am going to do is tap the escape key, I'm going up to the properties icon and I'll up the properties window or you can call it the properties palette. I am going to click on this icon which represents quick select and this is the quick select window and right now what I would like to do is to the entire drawing I'd like to select the arcs. Now the properties that I'd like to focus on are the color and since I'd like to make all of my object color properties by layer then the operator is going to read equals by layer. It is going to apply this to a new selection set, I can append it to a current selection set, but that's not necessary right now. I am going to click OK, as you can see all of the arcs have been highlighted, all 112 of them. I can now proceed to copy them from this location down to this location. I can tap the escape key and as you can see that was much quicker to do. Now I'd just like to show you this one more time, let me go ahead and undo and just change the properties of these two arcs instead of by layer I am going to make them green. Now I am going to do this one more time, I am going to click on quick select, once again apply to the entire drawing, the object type is an arc and the properties are still color, I can of course pick layer, line type, line type scale, but I'll stay with color and I'll say operator equals by layer. If I click OK you'll see that all of the arcs that have the properties of their color equal to by layer are selected. The two arcs which I have changed and their properties are no longer by layer have not been selected. So let me tap the escape key, go back to quick select and show you how I can pick the arcs where the color properties do not equal by layer, included in a new selection set and I can click OK and now those are the only arcs that are highlighted. Let me tap the escape key, go back to quick select and show you that you can select polylines, lines, some block references, circles, even hatches and you can decide if for example I go back to arc you want to pick the arcs that are on a layer equal to, let's say A plan or not equal to that layer. You have a lot of options here and once again this is very helpful if you have a large drawing and you just need to pick similar objects that have similar properties. So that is the cycle option and the quick select option when it comes to selecting objects in AutoCAD.
