Autodesk AutoCAD 2007 for Architects Tutorials

Drawing Tips / Intro to DesignCenter

Subtitles of the Movie

Design center has been around for a few versions of AutoCAD, but just like it was difficult to adopt the use of grips when they were first introduced, it takes some time to begin using other new features such as design center. In this overview I'd like to take you one step closer to using this content manager. To open design center I can click on the icon or I can use the keyboard shortcut, control 2 or I can click on the tools pull down menu, move down to palettes, across and down to design center. This is the design center window, the right pane contains the content area and the left pane contains the tree view. I can adjust the size of the design center window as well as adjust the balance between the right and left pane. I simply click and drag the mouse. In the content area I can also adjust the size of the preview and the description panes. AutoCAD refers to the files and folders shown in the tree view as containers, when they are highlighted their contents are displayed in what else but the content area. The design center window can be docked or it can remain floating just like the toolbars. Here I will dock it and now click, drag and float it. I can right click the title bar and turn on the auto hide feature, when my cursor moves away from the window the design center window is now hidden. When I place my cursor back on the title bar the design center window is now visible. I can also right click and select anchor left placing the title bar to the left side of the screen and now I'm going to place my cursor over that, as you can see the window is now visible. If I take my cursor away, then the window is now hidden. What I would like to do now though is simply click and drag the title bar and float the design center window here, I'm also going to right click and turn off auto hide for just a moment. To insert content I can simply click, drag and drop, for example the bathtub, I'm going to click, drag it and drop it into this drawing. I can go to layers and take for example this cabinetry layer and I'm going to place it into the drawing but first I'd like to show you that the layer does not exist in the drawing file and now I'm going to click, drag and drop and now if I look at the list of layers, there it is. I'm currently looking at the folders, I can also look at open drawings and history and I can go to DC online, design center online and I can look for 2D architectural symbols. Right now I'm looking at doors and windows and I can see a variety of doors. I've selected this door and as you can see, session has timed out, I need to reconnect to design center online. What that basically means is that I have to reestablish a connection, I will go to 2D architectural, select doors and windows, click on doors, scroll down, highlight that door once again and using the eye drop feature borrow that door and bring it into my drawing file. I will now click, drag and drop. Of course you will need an online connection in order to do this and it is a great benefit to borrow the many symbols available. I have to specify an insertion point right now so I'm going to click right here and I have the door. There you go, you can see it. As you continue to draw I hope that you will explore the benefits of design center and I will do my part to continue demonstrating the benefits of design center through out the tutorial.
