Drawing Tips / Blocks & Wblocks

Subtitles of the Movie

In order to discuss the use of blocks and W blocks in this tutorial I would like to provide you with my basic definitions. A quick reminder, always create your blocks on AutoCAD's default layer and that is layer zero. This is one of the few times that I actually use this layer. When inserted this will allow the block to take on the color properties of the selected layer. A block is a drawing within a drawing file, on the image to the right the door is a block within floorplan.DWG. The door does not have a DWG extension, a W block is simply a drawing file, the image on the right is the floor plan and it is a drawing file and it does have a DWG extension. A minor note that the term W block may become obsolete, but it will always be there as part of the commands. Understand that when a drawing file is inserted into another drawing file, it becomes a block within that drawing file, in other words the DWG extension is either removed or dropped, however you'd like to think about it. I'm going to switch to AutoCAD now, this is a blank drawing, I'm going to select insert block, I'm going to browse and I have a double door drawing file, I'm going to open that drawing file. When I do that you can see that the name is now listed here in the insert dialog box, but it does not contain the DWG extension, I'm going to click OK and I have just brought in a drawing file and it has now become a block within this drawing file. With design center blocks can be inserted directly from one drawing file into another. For long time AutoCAD users, in the past we would create W blocks in order to transfer information from one drawing file to another and that will not be necessary anymore. I'm going to switch to AutoCAD, I will go to design center and as you can see I have two drawing files open, drawing number three and X plan. I'm going to click on the blocks that are contained within X plan, there is a sink, I'm going to click, drag and drop into drawing three. I basically took one block from X plan straight into drawing number three and now if I were to take that block which was created on layer zero and place it on the new layer fixtures it does take on the color properties of that layer.
