The purpose of this tutorial has been to introduce the advanced commands and features that will assist you in becoming a better AutoCAD user as it relates to the discipline of architecture. In the first part of the tutorial I focused on demonstrating 2D drawing techniques. These techniques will prepare you to create construction documents based on common practices. The intention was always to use time efficiently and demonstrate the use of commands so that you can then complete similar working drawings at your own pace. In the second part of the tutorial I introduced 3D modeling and rendering techniques that will prepare you to create and visualize design ideas. I have also introduced other software that now compliments AutoCAD in the architectural office as the needs and demands of the client expand. AutoCAD continues to evolve while the old features remain, new features continue to challenge the way we use this robust drawing software. For architects and architectural drafters that have been using the software for more then 5 years and have thousands of drawing files on their hard drives, this presents an initial dilemma. How do you integrate new standards and adopt new features such as dynamic blocks and how will that effect the existing drawing files that you plan to continue using? The answer is straight forward, evolve with the software, learn how to use the new features and grow with the changes. Too many times we look to past which creates problems we need to look to the future, explore possibilities and implement change. Before creating this tutorial I spoke with architects, architectural drafters and Cad managers to determine how they have integrated AutoCAD with their practice and how they plan on using AutoCAD 2007 and its features. Taking your comments into consideration and comparing them with my use of AutoCAD over the years I have made a conscience effort to produce a quality tutorial. I have organized this tutorial in a manner that promotes learning by introducing new features and balancing their application with familiar commands. I have made every effort to model the application above new and existing commands to assist you in building your skills and advancing your knowledge. Architectural firms no longer want drafters that can replicate tasks, firms want architects and drafters that understand the tools of the trade and can think critically during any and all stages of the projects. There is a saying, "If you give a person a fish, that person will eat one good meal. If you teach the same person how to fish, they can eat for a lifetime." I would like to adapt that saying as it applies to this tutorial. If you give a person a list of AutoCAD commands, that person may create one good drawing, if you teach the same person how to use the commands and demonstrate the options and application of the commands, that person will use their creativity and create great drawings and great renderings. Use the tutorial to become great architectural AutoCAD users, if you make mistakes in the process, be glad and use the undo command. Because what you may call an error I would refer to as a learning opportunity that will lead to better drawings in the immediate future. It is a pleasure to share this information with you and I wish you success using AutoCAD 2007 with your 2D and 3D architectural projects.
