What we're going to do now is create a bottle using a Lathe Operation. And to do so we're going to use a regular old line. Let me go to a front view here, let me go to my handy dandy Cube. As a matter of fact I'll go to my Orthographic View instead, I'll right-click in this view here, Alt W. I'm going to go to my Create area and I'm going to choose Shapes. Alright. So we don't want geometry this one, we want shapes. And we're going to use the Line. I'm going to create a profile of a jar. You can also create a vase, baseball bat, a torpedo anything like this. So what we're going to do is create one half of this object and the best way to think about this, is rotating a piece of wood and then having cutting tools change the shape by slowly but surely whittling or lathing that stuff away. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to create, let's see here, it's just a half a bottle, doesn't really matter the shape. And I can also drag by the way to get a curve if I want to like Adobe Illustrator or any vector application. And once again I'm going to just create half the shape and to turn this tool off I'm simply going to right-click. Now what's going to happen is we're going to spin this guy around itself and at first it's not going to look quite right. And I'm going to show you how to fix that. So let's head over to our Modifiers. Don't forget the methodology in Max is typically you create and then you modify. I'm going to go to my Modifier List and I'll find the good old Lathe, there we go. As I said before it doesn't quite spin around the way we thought it was going to spin around but it does look cool. Let's go back to a 3D view here, I'll right-click in this view and I'll just you know zoom out a little bit. And as you can see we do have our bottle. So let's let's talk about how we can go ahead and get this the way we want it. So if you look under the Lathe here. Alright. We have this axis. The axis tells the line where it should spin around. And we can change that very easily and we can use this guy right here where it says Align. By default it goes to the center. We could also have it start from the right and now we have a wine goblet. What I want to do is choose Min, which is left and now I have that really cool decanter or that nice bottle I was talking about. Alright. So we have our bottle and you also see that we have a little craziness going on, on the bottom here. And to get rid of this we can go to this world core and now he's gone. Let's go back and flip around. So what else can we do this? Are we done? No. We can continue to work with this believe it or not because our line is still alive, he's still in there. So I'm going to go to the line and you see it's right there. If I want to I can twirl open or open up the Line Category, choose Vertex Mode and I can grab one of the vertices and I can move it around. I can grab the Bezier handles and I can completely change the shape of this bottle. I'll go ahead and make it quite drastic so I'll grab this one as well and move it way out here like so. We'll take this part and we'll move it down like this. Now I can also see what I'm doing instead of going back into a 3D Mode, by clicking this guy right here. And this will show me my end result. So as you could see the bottle looks completely different. We can continue to work on this at any time so I'm going to grab this point and interactively change the shape. Pretty sweet. We can also work on the segments or the spline itself to change the shape of the object. And as you see here I can always go back to the Lathe Operation again and I can change things. For example, I can change the direction and now I have a completely whacky shape or a bowl maybe. I can go on the Y axis and the Z axis. So depending on what you're creating you can change the axis as well as the alignment of the line itself. Alright guys? So that is a look at the awesome Lathe Operation. You can create some really, really interesting shapes with it.
