Scene Management / Schematic View

Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie we're going to start talking about the Schematic View in Max. To access the Schematic View let's go to the Graph Editors, New Schematic View. You can also access the Schematic View by going to the Main Toolbar and clicking on this button right here. The Schematic View shows you a Note-based hierarchy of your objects in the scene. I find it really useful when dealing with animation and rigging in Max, but it's always a good idea to start getting used to it slowly. For example, right now if I expand this a little bit, you can see my Left Upper Leg 01, which is this one right here, displayed. I can quickly select it from here; select the Knee, select the Ankle, Ball, and Toe. I can do the same with my Left Upper Leg, Left Knee, Left Ankle, Ball, and Toe, and right now, I'm seeing a mode over here called a Reference mode. I can select on this and say, Show me a Hierarchy mode, so everything is displayed in the hierarchy. I can also make connections and break connections. So, for example if I go back to my Left Upper Leg and let's say, for some reason, I don't want the knee to be connected to the leg. I can quickly click on the Knee and hit this button right here, and you can see how the left upper leg is separate. Similarly, I can click on the Knee Back and connect it, so drag, and there you go. Just do Link and Unlink. I have a Cylinder in my scene right now, so if I go back over here, and it's got some simple Modifiers, so it's got a Noise and Bend Modifier. What if I want to see the Noise and the Bend in the Schematic View? I can click on this one, and simply say Display the Modifier Stack. Now, this little toolbar is not showing up; this little floater is not showing up. You can just click on this button over here, and there you go, that's the Display Floater. I can say Show me the Modifier Stack, and there you go. If it didn't expand you can right-click and say Expand Selected. Now, if I want to delete the Bend, I can quickly do it from here, and there you go. The object is not bent anymore and the Bend Modifier is gone. So, again, it's a really cool way of seeing what's happening in your scene, and also organizing your workflow, and as I said, you will really find this useful when you start dealing with animation and rigging in Max. But, again, it's a good idea to slowly, slowly start getting used to it.
