Scene Management / Selection Sets

Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie we're going to talk about Selection Sets in Max. Selection Sets are really handy as in they allow you to select a lot of objects with just one click. For example, in this case, let's say if I wanted to select all the Cups, I'll have to either go this way by Control clicking on them, or I can go to H, which is my Select by Name dialog box, and select them this way, which is cool. But, what if I really want to work even faster than this? Now, with the Cup selected, I'm just going to go in this area and type in Cups, and that's made my Selection Set for me. If I click outside, and let's say if I wanted to select the Cups again, I quickly go here, Cups. So, that's really, really a cool way of selecting your objects. If you want to manage these Selection Sets you can simply go to Edit, Manage Selection Sets, or you could quickly click on this button over here, and the Name Selection Set dialog box opens up. Here you can see that the Set that I just made, Cups, is showing over here. If I open the plus sign these are all the objects. Now, what if I wanted to add the Carpet inside this Set? All I need to do is simply select the Carpet, and select the Set, and Add. So, you can see right now, the Carpets are added. I can also select the Carpet right here in the Viewport again. Select the Set and click on the negative sign over here to remove the Carpet, and you can see how it's gone. Let's make another Set. How about making a Set this time with the Carpet and the Table, and let's call it, you can also make it from here, by the way Ð with these two selected I can call it Tablecar, something like that, and there you go. If I open this you can see the Carpet and Table are right here. Now, if I wanted to move the Carpet in the Cups Selection Set, I can simply just do this. And if I open the Cups right now, you can see how the Carpet is gone there. So, it's really, really a nice way of organizing your work again. I can click on this button and you can again open the, like my Name dialog box. You can also make Selection Sets for Sub-object Levels, and don't worry right now if I'm going to the Sub-object mode, you will learn about this, an Editable Poly. So, let's say for example, if I'm selecting a few polygons over here. I can quickly make a Selection Set for this. Now, if I click out, the Selection Set is no longer there, because I have to go back to the Sub-object Level, Polygons, and there's my Selection Set. So, if I click outside to deselect it, there it is. So, start using Selection Set. It's another cool way of organizing your work and quickly selecting objects.
