Scene Management / Layers

Subtitles of the Movie

Another cool way of organizing your work in Max is by putting your objects in Layers. In this scene I have named everything so, this is my Carpet, as you can see the name right here, the Table, and so on. To access Layers, you can go to Tools, Manage Layers, and this is the Layers dialogue box that opens up, or, you could simply go to this button on the Main Toolbar. By Default, Max will put everything in one layer, so if I open this, you can see all my objects are under the Default Layer. There are some really cool buttons over here, so, for example, if I'm under my Hide and I want to hide my Table, I can just click over here and you can see how the Table is hidden. If I want to Freeze the Table, which will prevent me from selecting the Table, I can do it from here. I can also have the Table not being rendered. So, if I just turn this Teapot over here, you can see how it's turned Off so the Table will not render right now. Let's say if I'm on the Vase, I can change its color, so right now it's green. If I double-click I can change it to whatever I want, and so on. So, how do you put your objects in Layers? Well, it's really simple. Let's select a few objects. For example, if I wanted to select the Carpet in this case I can just go to the Layers and click on this button, and right now my Carpet is under that Layer. I can right-click, Rename, or simply double-click over here, and then highlight the Layer 01, and I can call this Carpet. Let's select all these Cups over here from the Select by Name dialogue box, and let's make a new Layer and you can see automatically all of them are in that Layer. Right-click, Rename, right there. And now I can hide the Cups, there's the Carpet, let's hide the Cups, Freeze the Cups and so on. So, really, really an important, important window, I would say. Start using it because this is really a big, big time saver when it comes to large scenes. You can really organize your work very nicely in the Layers window.
