Scene Management / Select by Name Dialog
Subtitles of the Movie
In this movie we're going to take a look at the Select by Name dialog box. To access this, go in your Main Toolbar and it's this button right here. You can also open this just by pressing H on the keyboard, H as in Home, or you could go Edit, Select by Name, and you can see that's the Hotkey right there. This is a really, really nice window that opens up in Max and it's very, very useful for selecting objects, organizing your work, and so on. You can see right on the top over here it says Display, so this is displaying all my different objects in the scene. So, what I've done in this scene Ð let me quickly close this Ð is, I made pretty much every different type of object you can make in Max. For example, this over here is a Geometry, this is a Curve which is showing renderable right now, so it's showing me the thickness; this is a Helper object right here; these guys over here are these Capsules, are in a group, and we will learn about all these things in the later movies. This is a Light over here, this is another Helper Object, this is a Space Warp over here, like a Gravity Space Warp; these are some Bones, and so on, and a Camera, right here. So, let's quickly go back to the Select by Name, either by pressing H, or clicking on this button right here, and you can see how everything is nicely displayed in the scene root, and right now this one's my Display Geometry, my Display Shapes; so, if I turn off this Display Geometry, all my geometry is going to turn off. If I turn off Shapes, all the shapes are going to turn off. If I turn off Lights Ð these are my lights over here, Fill Light, and Main Light Target Ð you can see that they're gone, so they're not displaying, Cameras, so, just remember they're just not displaying over here, but if I say OK right now, they're still in the Viewport, and if I turn off my Helpers right now, so my Dummy is not going to show up, Space Warps, and so on. This is my Groups button, so I have a simple group over here, so the Capsules group, and you can see that's the icon for that. And get familiar with these icons right here. You can see these icons appear exactly the same, so you can look at this, look at this, that's your Geometry, these are your Lights, and so on. This is your Shapes, these are your Cameras, and so on. So, Display Groups, it doesn't show me the groups; I don't have any XRefs. XRefs are nothing but external References in Max, so you can have an object on the outside, not exactly in the same Max scene, but you can still call it in your Current Max Scene. So, I don't have any XRefs. Joints, or Bones, right here, I've named them Joints, Display Bones, and they're not showing. Plus, I can also say Display All, Display None, or Inward Display. I don't have any Selection Sets right now, so these buttons are for all the Selection Sets. The good thing about this Select by Name dialog box is, it also tells me what type of object this is right here, so, for example, Mr. T, which is basically this guy right here, and it's Mr. T-E-A-T, not Mr. T. It's just geometry right here. Tabletop is just a geometry type. The Fill Light is a light type and so on, and also the Colors. It's also displaying me the colors for my objects. For example, the Teapot over here is brown and you can see that's the brown color right there. So, I can pretty much use the Select by Name dialog box to select my objects. So, let's say if I wanted to select a certain thing in my scene, I can just go here and say, what if I wanted to select the, let's say, the Gravity Field. I can just double-click and you can see my Gravity Field over here is selected. So, really, really a nice way of collecting objects in your scene. You can also just hold down Control and select a bunch of things, right there, and you can see some objects are selected. Let's go back. I can also drag a selection like this, and there we go. So, a very, very important dialog box to see what's in your scene, and you can also find objects over here, so a nice little Find tool. So, let's say if I just hit C right now, so you can see it's already selecting stuff with C. So, what if I go to, how about, let's do S. And you can see pretty much everything with S, even the scene root is being selected, and you can collapse the hierarchy over here, you can collapse the entire scene over here. So, it's a very, very useful dialog box. Start using it, and again, it's very simple to access it. You can access it either in your Main Toolbar over here, or the H Hotkey. I find, personally, the H Hotkey really, really easy and fast to work with. As I said again, earlier in some earlier movies, make sure that you start getting used to these Hotkeys slowly, slowly, but also at the same time know what's, you know, what's on the Toolbar or where your Tool is. So, please play around with this, it's a very, very important little button right here, Select by Name dialog box.
