Intro to Pages / Format Text

Subtitles of the Movie

In the previous module, and I'm guessing that you tuned in for the previous module, but in the previous module we look at how to insert text in our document and we got started with the format bar here, which let's us start to format that text as you would expect. There's another way to do this and that is to use the inspector and the inspector is something that we'll use constantly throughout our look at all these different applications. We've looked at it already in our look at Keynote, but now we're looking at it for the first time in Word and it's really going to look and feel pretty much the same. It's going to bring a palette up with lots of different buttons on it, lots of different sections and the one we're concerned with, if we want to edit and format the text, is the text inspector and in fact if you have your insertion point in a block of text and then launch the inspector, you should see the text inspector already preselected for you. Now, you can toggle this on and off with the button. You can close it with the red X in the upper left-hand corner and by the way, this is part of the standard toolbar, which is a little bit more forgiving here for my resolution in terms of Pages than it was in Keynote because there are less selections by default for that toolbar. So if you ever don't see the toolbar, make sure it is also viewable, or if you want it off, on the other hand, you can turn it off with hide toolbar and by the way, if you ever want more than one inspector palette open, you have the option to do that as well and that is by clicking on the view menu and then clicking on new inspector. So maybe you'll want to deal with the document in total and also deal with just a certain section of text and be able to quickly toggle back and forth. You can do that, by the way, by clicking here and then here and if it helps you to have two of those inspectors open, certainly you have the ability to do that. So you can choose obviously with selected text. You can choose different color, different alignment so you can make this centered if you're dealing with something like this. You have choices about your spacing before and after, so before the paragraph and what's nice here is you get something that you get to preview before you make the change effective by just closing the inspector, but you can see exactly what 29-point or 38-point spacing is going to look like before the next paragraph. Same thing with your line and character spacing. If I have something selected, a word selected for example, I can expand it and I can see exactly what the results will be when I let go of the mouse before I make that change effective. So I don't really need to concentrate too much, in my opinion, you don't need to concentrate too much on the percentages or any of the points as far as making your changes in your spacing or your character spacing or line spacing. All this can be done with this simple slide of these slide bars here. So I'm going to make the inspector go away, the text inspector go away and I want to show you one more interesting feature of the format bar here. Again, it should be shown but if it's not, make sure it's shown. If I select a picture, the format bar is going to change and so this format bar is context specific. If I select text, it changes and lets me format the text. If I select a picture, the changes now that come into play let me format and work with the picture. So if I want to quickly add a shadow or a reflection for the picture, I can do so by just making a couple of checkboxes here. If I want to change the opacity, I have the ability to do that. So if I select a picture, I have picture-specific tools in the format bar. If I select text with a click, I have font-related, generally font-related commands, which I can give to that text. So it's a very handy thing and that's why again I recommend that if it's not visible, that you go ahead and put that format bar in your toolbar space so it can be ready for you to give it commands.
