Intro to Pages / Add Text
Subtitles of the Movie
Alright. This module is about adding text and before you say to yourself and pause the thing and say he really didn't talk about adding text, did he? It's going to be about more than just that. I'm going to give you some shortcuts and also get into how to start to format that text as well. So just about anybody can figure out how to add text and that is you can set the insertion point with the mouse with a click and then start typing away. Now, if you're dealing with a template, just bear in mind that all this Latin that you see is placeholder text. So all it takes is a single click to select that text and now if you start typing, Brian is a budding shutterbug, something like that, and you're seeing an attribute here that comes up in future modules, which is the autocorrect behavior, the spell correct behavior that's built into Pages, but what you can see here obviously is just it's very easy to add text. You can also use your arrow keys to navigate around and if I just use the arrow keys, if I'm just using the left and right arrow key, because I'm going over some placeholder text, I can also select that entire text just with the arrow keys. So if I start typing once again with the blue highlight behind it, it will replace whatever's there. So this will replace and so on. Now, what I also want to show you is the use of the delete key, which obviously would delete one character to the left, but also what some people don't realize is that you can delete to the right as well. So sometimes you're thinking, well, I'd like to delete that E, I'll hold down the function key and press delete. It will delete whatever is to the right of the insertion point. To undo, you have command Z, which also you can get to from the edit menu. As you can see, the undo and redo applications are right there for you. What I also want to show you is the use of the option key with the delete and the function delete. So that will, with the option key delete, it will delete an entire word, which I will undo. I could also navigate back and forth. Most people, once they start to deal with a word processing application will want to keep their hands on the keyboard almost as much as possible because after all, that's what it's all about. You want to be typing and not using the mouse. When you're using the mouse, you're not adding content to your word processing document. The option key will also help you navigate a little more quickly. If I hold down the option key and use the arrow keys, it will jump me to the beginning and end of entire words, as you can see with the left arrow. Up and down does the same thing. It jumps me an entire paragraph at a time. As you can see, I'm not going every line. I'm going a paragraph at a time. So remember the option key to jump around. Remember the option key delete will delete an entire word to the left of the insertion point. The function key option delete will delete an entire word to the right of the insertion point there. And then again, your undo is there for you to use as well. Another thing that's very easy to do, and worth mentioning, we just kind of threw it in here at the end of this module is the ability to select text and then format. So you can change the font, you can change the stroke, light, light italic, regular, italic, bold, bold italic, we can change the font size, the font color, bold, italicized, underline. It's just very simple commands can be done right here and then align the text to the right, center it, justify the text and so on. All that's done with something called the format bar and if you don't see the format bar, it should be there by default, but if you don't see it, go to the view menu, make sure that the format bar command is enabled. So if you see hide format bar there, then the format bar should be showing. If I click on it, it will hide it. And to show it once again, click on show format bar from the view menu. So that's how to get started. We've opened up a new document, now we start to add text and again, it's pretty simple to do. Even though everyone really knows how to add text, there's still a couple of things, especially keyboard shortcuts, that can make that job a lot easier.
