In this module, we will look at the use of master slides and each of the slides that you've been building throughout this tutorial are based on some kind of slide master. You've seen this before. We've been able to take a slide and use the masters button here and we can change the layout of the slide by just choosing a different master to use and if we use a different enough master, like photo three-up, we might even shove what we've already written or inserted into the slide, we might make that a moot point. So this is the current slide that we've selected and it is based off of the title and subtitle master and all of these masters that you see here are a part of the theme that we are using. And so the masters become part of our theme. So when we select a new theme, we're also selecting by default a series of slide masters. Now, most of your themes have generally the same kind of masters, whether it be title and subtitle, title and bullets and so on. And as we've seen, it's very easy to make modifications. But maybe your company colors are beige and red for example and so every title slide that you're going to use will be using red text in the title. So how do we make that occur? Because if I just create a new slide here, let me just put a new slide in here. We'll make the title and subtitle and if I start to edit this, you notice that it's going to use gray text. Well, what if we want that text to be a different color? Use a different font and so on? What I can do is I can edit that master slide and I can do this for any of the master slides that we have. First of all though, you need to be able to identify where the tools are so that we can make edits to our master slides and those tools are right here. Go to the view menu and click on this one; show master slides. So now we have, in this column on the left, we have, we can see our master slides and we also still have the ability to see our current slides or presentation. So again, let's select this one. This is based off of that title and subtitle. If I click elsewhere, you'll see that that's, title and bullets is the current master slide. And to make changes, all you do is you make a selection of some element and you use the inspector and you make your changes. You can do this from a couple different places, but one of the places that it is best to make these changes is from the slide inspector. Notice you can click on appearance here and you can put a slide number there, an object placeholder there if you want to, title and body, you can choose different backgrounds and so on and you can do this for each of your masters. Now, what I recommend before you start tinkering with this too much is that you get in the habit of doing this. Do a control click and then duplicate an existing master slide because you can make a modification and make that part of your theme, but I always like to be able to go back to where we were before and there's not reason to be destructive here with your original master. Let's just call this one, let's call it VTC Title for example and now we can have this slide selected and we can come into the title text for example and we can use the inspector and we can use the text inspector so we can pick a different color. Let's do red. What else? Anything else we should do here? I think that's probably good enough. We could also, let's just for a giggle, let's put a slide number on there as well. So let's just close this. We'll make just a couple of simple little edits. There's our title text. We can use the font to change the font type as well, but we have again this VTC Title which uses a different kind of format than the title and subtitle. So what will that make happen? Well, let's hide our master slides and let's do this. Let's create a new slide. Let's just do a new slide and the master that's being used is the next one down which is now VTC Title and I can rearrange those if I wanted to with the master slide layout. But there we go. Now I double click to edit and new title and the changes that I dictated about that master slide are of course what is causing this text to be red. And so that is how you can work with master slides to save yourself some work when you are making changes to your themes. You can then either save the theme and create a new theme that is based on these changes that you make.
