Introduction to iMovie / Setting up your Mac
Subtitles of the Movie
Before we start capturing some video, I need to advise you on some housekeeping items, which will avoid potential problems when running iMovie. iMovie needs a screen resolution of at least 800/600 pixels. It can also operate quite comfortably at 1028/768 but no higher. If you have a 17-inch or a larger monitor, the higher resolution is probably the best choice to work with. iMovie also needs to work in thousands of colors. Do not be tempted to increase this to millions as you'll just be adding an unnecessary workload for your Mac's processor. Before using iMovie, turn a sleep mode in your energy saver Control Panel. Some iMovie operations may take a along time to complete and an active sleep mode may well interrupt what iMovie is doing. If you have at least 128 megabytes of operating RAM, go to the memory Control Panel and turn off virtual memory. This will assist iMovie to run everything more smoothly and it prevents clicking noises from occurring during play back and capture. I strongly advise you to upgrade your computer to at least 128 megabytes of RAM and allocates 64 of these to iMovie. However, if you want to stay with 64 megs, you can help iMovie by going to your extensions manager and turning off all of the control panels and extensions that you know you won't be using during video editing. For example, turn off all of the printer, scanner, and Internet extensions. If you're thorough you may well be able to save 6 or 7 megs. of operating RAM and allocate the saved RAM to iMovie. Rename the new extension set to say iMovie set and whenever you use iMovie choose this set, of course, you'll need to restart your computer to make the iMovie extension active. Do not change your sound input device while iMovie is open. If you need to connect another microphone or a tape recorder or maybe a mini disc player, close iMovie down first, open the sound Control Panel, select external mike, and then open iMovie. At this time, USP microphones are not supported by iMovie. iMovie may complain if you try to operate more than one Firewire device at a time. For example, if your camcorder and an external Firewire drive are switched on at the same time.
