iTunes / Sharing Music
Subtitles of the Movie
I have a lot of my music in my iTunes library and so does my wife and we have different tastes in music. She likes a lot of jazz, I like a lot of movie soundtracks, I like a lot of R & B and occasionally I like to listen to the audio book and the cool thing about iTunes is that you can share your library on a network. I have a wireless network in my house and I can share my iTunes library with the other computer in the household as you see right here on the shared list. And, of course, this icon means I can stop the sharing and eject the disk's hard drive that I'm sharing. So I'm going to go to the iTunes preferences and show you how to turn on sharing. So you go to the iTunes preferences and you want to choose right here where it says sharing. Now, what you want to enable is look for shared libraries and then you want to share your library on a local network. Now, when you have this checkmark enabled, the iTunes interface is going to automatically look on your network and see which computers also have sharing turned on. And then those computers will show up in this shared list. Now, on your end, you can share your library by choosing to share the entire library or choose selected playlists. So you can choose podcast, audio books or whatever you want to share. I'm going to keep my entire library on and I can also require a password if I so desire and this is really helpful when you want to make sure that the right people listen to the music in case you have some lyrics that might not be suitable for younger people and that kind of thing. So once you have sharing on, you simply click OK and then your computer will show up in the other person's computer list in iTunes as well as their playlist showing up here. Now, the one thing that you want to keep in mind is you're only sharing this library. You don't really own it so you can only listen to the music on your computer. So you're not going to be able to put it on your iPod this way. That's not going to happen. The only way you're going to be able to put it on your iPod or your iPhone is if you have the CD in your house. So borrow the CD, you put the music on your machine, she puts it on her machine and then you both have the copies of the songs in your computer. Otherwise you're only going to be able to listen to the music. But, then again, as long as you're sharing it, you can have a vast library that you simply wouldn't be able to do on your own. To turn sharing off, simply go back to preferences and deselect these guys here, click OK and then sharing goes away.
