iPhoto / Ken Burns Effect
Subtitles of the Movie
Just like in iMovie, you'll also find the Ken Burns effect present in iPhoto and it's apparent when you create a slideshow. So what does the Ken Burns effect do? Well, first of all, let's talk about who Ken Burn is. He is a documentary filmmaker and he likes to use still images that go with narration to convey a story and the still images have motion applied to them; hence the Ken Burns effect. So we're emulating his style. What I'm going to do here is I'm going to use a slideshow that I already created, Baltimore 07 slides, and I'm going to apply the Ken Burns effect by enabling this little checkmark here. Then what you're going to do is pretty much use the start switch and the end switch to set the start position and the end position for the image itself. So what happens is you click on start, which is already enabled and then you simply move your image, like zooming in and out like so, and then you pan with your hand, with the little hand icon and find a place where you'd like to start your talking or your narration and focus on a part of the image. Then switch over to the end side, like so. And then once again, you can zoom in or out and then move the image to another part so that you can talk about something else in that particular picture. So once you're all said and done with that, you can apply that to each image at a time. So you click on one image after another up here. You apply the effect that's already on the start position. I'll zoom in a little bit and then I'll click on the end position and I'll zoom all the way out. So one at a time you can do this. Or you can have the Ken Burns effect by applied automatically. Just enable the Ken Burns effect and the iPhoto will go ahead and apply that for you. You can also choose music. So you click on the music and then you can choose something from the Garage Band or iTunes or anything. I'm going to use For the Mind here, click OK, then I can choose a transition. So I can have the images dissolve into one another or go into a cube so that they spin out. I can use a droplet. I can do a fade-through and even more, like twirl and wipe. So just experiment with these. They're quite interesting. Then, last but not least, I can look at my settings and then decide the duration for each slide. Currently, they are set to play for three seconds each. Once again, I can choose my transition and increase or decrease the speed of that transition, as well as the direction for that transition where applicable, because all of them don't have that ability. For example, I could choose something like I believe push and I could choose a direction for the push. I'll go ahead and put that back on dissolve. I can have the slideshow repeat. I can scale the photos to fit the screen and as you, it's already applied automatically by having this selected. I can show titles, which will show the name of the image. I can show my ratings and hide or show slideshow controls. I can also have my music repeat during the slideshow or, if I have a lot of slides, I might want to choose fit slideshow to music. So if I have a two-minute song and I have 20 images, I can have the images play for the duration of the music itself. Once I'm happy with that, I can go ahead and click OK and what I'm going to do is show you a slideshow that I exported and this is what it looks like. So what you can do while you're showing someone this or if you want to take your slideshow, which is already a movie, into Garage Band, you can narrate over it and say something without the music, of course, and talk about Baltimore or whatever location you visited. So if you want to export your slideshow by the way, just go to the file menu and choose export, choose location and a size and then you have a QuickTime movie you can watch.
