iPhoto / Searching
Subtitles of the Movie
One day, if not now, you're going to find that your iPhoto library is way, way out of control. You're going to have a lot of images. Let me just show you what I'm talking about. I'm going to go to my library list here and click on photos and now I'm going to look down here. I have 1,168 items. That's a lot of photographs and it will take me a long time to search for something in particular if I didn't already have it in an album. For example, there is a video game that I love to play called Rollercoaster Tycoon and I have it set so that the characters that are based on myself and my wife will automatically go to little photo booths and take pictures of themselves on the ride. I know it sounds crazy, but trust me. It's the coolest thing in the world to see the computer versions of yourself taking photos of themselves enjoying the theme park. So I have a collection of photos in my library. So I'm going to go to my search field down here and I'm going to type in RCT because I know that's the Rollercoaster Tycoon folder and here is the category here and the different dates as I scroll. Now, let's go ahead and clear this out by clicking on the X here. Let me show you other ways to search for images. I can go here to this little magnifying glass and click and you'll see that a list pops up. I can search by all, I can search by date, keyword and rating. Let's go ahead and try date. When you click on date, you'll see that this pops up here with the calendar. I can click on this arrow here to go to the entire month list or click here to go one month at a time. Likewise, I can choose a month and double click on it and go just to that month. Now, let's go back to that list here of the year. Whenever you see something highlighted like this in bold, you have images that have been taken in that month. So if I click on January, nothing; March, nothing, but July has images. April has images and that's how it works with that. So I'm going to double click on November and here are some images that I took and what I can do is once again go back to date and see that I have a bolded nine here, which means that no photos were taken on the sixth, seventh or any other day but the ninth of November. I can also cycle and go month by month by using these arrows here. Very handy. Let's go ahead and cancel this by clicking on X and whenever you click on the X, you pretty much clear out the search criteria and you can start again. So, so far we talked about how to type your own words in here. We looked at the date. We're going to talk more about keywords later on, but when you click on keyword, you're presented with these keywords here. So if you've ever labeled anything vacation, those things will show up. Kids, favorite, birthday, and more. I'm going to clear that out and we can also search by rating. So you can choose and drag your mouse until you find photographs that meet that criteria and then they will show up in your list and ratings are something we'll talk about again in another lesson, especially in the iTunes section. And rating is pretty much the same in all the applications. So that is how you can search for images in your steadily growing iPhoto library.
