iPhoto / The Interface
Subtitles of the Movie
Welcome to iPhoto in the new iLife '08 suite. It is an application that we're going to come to time and time again to not only store your favorite photographs, but also use it as an asset management application and I'll talk more about what that means a little later on. But briefly, it simply means a place that you can store not only your photos, but also your videos and files that you find on your computer, such as images from a long time ago, images from your portfolio, artwork that you may be sketching, that kind of thing. So it's a really nice place to find everything and then put it in one neat package. So let's go ahead and talk about the interface itself. As with most applications, you will find the title bar located at the very top of the application and of course, from the title bar you can create new albums, you can do your editing and so on. Many of the same functions you'll find up here can be accessed from the tools down below as well. On the left side in this pane here, we have our source list or our library and the reason I brought up source list is because if you're more familiar with iTunes, this is what your source list would be here, where all you albums and everything live. So all the applications kind of share that same kind of methodology. So we have our library which contains our events, our photos, a recent category, which contains any recent files you may have imported or flagged and we have our albums here. You can also twirl these little arrows up and down to hide and show things and down here we have any projects we may have created, such as web galleries and that kind of thing. This button is a multi-segment button and it allows you to create new items such as albums, smart albums and more. This button here allows you to get information on a selected item. So if I go ahead and click on an image, for example, this guy here, I click on the I and I can see when it was shot, the time of the day and the file type. Also how large that file is. I can use this button here to go to full-screen mode and all I have to do to exit it is to go over here to the bottom and hit this X and it returns me to my regular interface. This button here is what you want to play any slideshows you create in iPhoto and we'll talk about slideshows later on. This our search field and you click this little guy right here by the magnifying glass to change what you're searching for. For example, a date, a keyword or a rating. These buttons down here allow you to create things such as books, calendars, galleries and also the flag images and to hide images you may not be happy with. You can also edit your images and rotate. So I'll click this guy here and click on edit and now I have my editing tools. Once I'm happy with my changes, I click done and once again, I'm brought back into the main interface. This area is handy to find out how many photos you have in a particular album. As you see, I have Baltimore 07 selected and in this album I have 26 photos and on Baltimore Night, I have three. This allows me to slide in and out and magnify my images so I can see a lot of them or zoom in all the way so I can focus on one in particular. And because I am shooting this video at a smaller size than your screen might be, you may see this little button here if you have a laptop that you're following along with or you might not have this at all and you'd rather see these other options here. You can order prints and you can print your images and you can also create an iWeb photo page or blog and I will talk more about iWeb later on in this tutorial. So this is the interface for iPhoto and there is a lot more to learn and to do.
