Introduction / Macintosh and PC Conventions
Subtitles of the Movie
The iLife suite has a lot of applications contained within it. So if you are on a Windows PC, the only application that you will be able to really use and take advantage of is iTunes. If you'd like to use iPhoto, iMovie, Garage Band and the rest, you'll have to buy a Macintosh computer. But let me also mention that the latest Macintosh models allow you to run Windows as well. The computer I'm recording on is a Mac Pro and I can use Windows. As a matter of fact, I have Windows Vista on this very machine. So I have the best of both worlds. So for anyone who is considering using the entire iLife suite, feel free to pick up a Macintosh because you can have both; the new as well as what you're used to on the Windows platform. Now, let's talk very briefly about some of the keyboard shortcuts that will be different for you if you are coming over from the Windows side. You will notice that there is a button on your keyboard called the command key. Normally it has a picture of an apple on it, so what you'll do is instead of hitting the control key, you'll use the command key. So for example, if I asked you to press command P, that means print or command S means save, as opposed to control S. For people who have a Macintosh and you use a one-button mouse, whenever you want to simulate a right click, all you have to do is hold down the control key and when you hold down the control key, you'll be presented with the contextual menu. Notice how my mouse changes. Before I hold control I have the regular pointer. When I hold control, I have the contextual menu, which is what you would receive if you have a right mouse button on a multi-button mouse. I do recommend to work more efficiently on your Macintosh or even on your PC you might want to invest in a multi-button mouse. They're not expensive at all and you can save some keystrokes on your keyboard by simply right clicking instead of holding down a key. So that's really all there is to it when it comes to the difference between working with Apple applications on a Macintosh. If you have a Windows platform once again, you're going to start using what's known as a command key. So having said that, let's get ready to have some good times with the iLife '08 suite.
