Orientation On Main Windows / Opening Shake for the First Time

Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie we will cover opening Shake for the first time and exploring its interface window. The Shake application can be started from the desktop or from the command line. On Mac OS X, open a new Finder window. Go to the Applications Directory, and double-click the Shake icon. Or, if it's present, click the Shake icon from the dock. On Linux or Irex, enter the word Shake into any shell. To open Shake from the terminal on a Mac, you must type in the complete path: Applications/Shake/Shake.app/Contents/MacOS/Shake. When you open Shake, a blank Shake script appears. Shake project files are called Scripts, because they're actually a text file that contains all the information that you assemble in the graphical user interface of the Shake Node Tree. Power users familiar with Shake's coding language can modify a composite by opening the .SHK file in any text editor and changing the scripts. This is only recommended if you know the Shake scripting language because incorrect modifications to a Shake script could render the script unreadable by the program. Shake is designed to only have one script open at a time, however if you need to have two scripts open, such as when you want to copy information from one script to another, you can do it by duplicating the Shake application in the Applications folder and opening both copies at once. But, the first copy of Shake is the only one that will be able to cache or pre-render files. When you first open Shake, you'll notice that the interface is divided into four areas, some of which have tabs. These are: the viewer, the node view, the tool tabs, and the parameters. To resize any area of the screen, position the pointer at any border between areas and drag to change the size of that area. If you hover your mouse over an intersection between areas, you can resize more than one area at a time. To expand an area to take up the entire screen, hover your mouse over the area you wish to expand and press the space bar. To hide an area of the interface, drag a border all the way up or all the way down to obscure or show it. To move a tab to another area, middle mouse button drag the tab or option click or alt click to drag to another window pane. That gives you this little hand. To detach a tab, shift, middle mouse button click or shift, option click that tab. To open a floating tweaker, select the node you wish to fine tune and press control T. A floating tweaker window for the node appears. Contextual help: hovering the mouse over controller parameter gives a brief help message in the info area at the bottom of the Shake interface. Shortcut menus and lists: you can also right click many controls to see shortcut menus additional command and functions. Also try clicking or press and holding a button with your mouse to see more options.
