The third way to export an animation is to share it. The Share Command replaces the old Export Using Compressor command, but as you can see when I choose it I still have access to the Compressor program with this button. The reason you would choose using Compressor to render your animation is because you can create a batch of animations to render all at once. What this means, in other words, is that you can have Compressor render several projects, not just one, all at once unattended by you. But the Share command itself gives you several common export options for sharing or sending your animation on to its next destination - formatting it for DVD or Blu-ray for instance. I want this animation to go to two different places: my YouTube account and, when I click a Plus sign I can add a second destination - my MobileMe account. As soon as I check on Publish for these accounts and Action Drawer pops out. Here I can enter my Login information and retitle a movie if I want. Also in the Action Drawer I'll click the Output button and this gives me access to the rendering effects just like the Output options in the regular Export dialog. You'll want to also check on the Show Progress option and the Use Play Range option if you're not exporting your entire Timeline. For the YouTube file make sure you fill in all of the fields. I'll tag it with the word Animation. I'll click Export and Motion opens up the Batch Monitor application, which is also part of Final Cut Studio. Here I can watch the rendering progress and see if there's any problems. Once the export is done I can visit my MobileMe website and view my animation there, or YouTube and I published my masterpiece for all the world to see. Of course, the significance of using the Share Export command is that you can create multiple destinations all at once just like the Compressor application, but without having to leave Motion. Very cool. Of course, the core program to Final Cut Studio is Final Cut Pro itself. We've already seen a couple of examples of how Motion projects can be imported directly into Final Cut without exporting the projects as final renders. Of course, you've always been able to round-trip from Final Cut to Motion. You can select a shot or shots you want graphics on from the Final Cut Timeline, then right- or Ctrl-click and choose Send To Motion Project. But you don't have to send a clip over to Motion. In the Final Cut Viewer window click on the Generator button and choose Slug. Drag the slug into the Timeline. You can trim its duration if you want from its default 10 seconds. I'll make it around 5 seconds. The Slug is basically a placeholder. I'll select just the Slug in the Timeline and then right-click and choose Send to Motion Project. You'll be asked to name this output and also make sure that the Embed Motion Content is checked on, then click Save and then Motion will launch, if it's not already open and it will automatically open the project. In this case I have an empty group because the Slug is not considered an object in Motion, so I have an empty Canvas. You can then add your graphics. I'll just add a lower third I have saved in a Favorites folder, position it and play it. Looks good. Then Save the Motion project. Back in Final Cut and the Slug has been replaced by the Motion animation. There's a couple of settings you should check in the Final Cut User Preferences. First, in the Editing tab make sure that Always reconnect externally modified files is checked on. If it isn't, the embedded Motion animation will not automatically update in Final Cut's Timeline after you make any further changes to it in Motion. Second, in the Render Control tab see the section that says: Master templates in Motion projects? You should change the default method of handling Motion projects from the Normal Quality setting to Best. Best will ensure your text and filters look good and certain effects like Optical Flow Time Remapping will not work properly unless you set this Preference correctly. So, Best. All the way.
