Another neglected yet important feature is Motion's ability to customize its commands. For instance, if I'm editing a track in Motion I very often use the Split Command, but as you can see, there's no keyboard shortcut for that. Traveling up and down to the Menu Bar and the Edit Menu over and over is tedious, so I'd like to have my own shortcut for the Split Track function. So, let's go to the Motion Menu and right there is the Commands option and I want to select Customize. And there is a graphic version of my keyboard. This is the Command Editor. I'm currently using the standard set of commands that ships with Motion. Next I want to go to the Search field on the right and enter Split. It finds the command, but as you can see there is no keyboard shortcut associated with it, as expected. Now, let me switch the Command set to a Custom set I already have, Scott Standard Set. Now in the Command List you see that the Split Command now has a keyboard shortcut associated with it, which is Ctrl-2. Let me close the Commands window. And in this project I have an object and when I select its track and press the Ctrl and number 2 keys on the keyboard I get my Split at the Playhead. And now if I look in the Edit Menu it indicates the custom-assigned keyboard shortcut. Great. So, how does this work? Back to the Menu Bar and the Command Editor. When you start you won't have any custom commands so you need to duplicate the standard set. You cannot edit the standard set so duplicate it and rename it. On the bottom left are groupings of commands. I want the View Group and there are commands for Quality settings, but no shortcuts. Simply click on the Command with your mouse and then you can use your physical keyboard to type in the keys you want to use for those commands. So, I want these to be in this order: Draft and I'll type Shift key and the number 1 key; Normal is Shift-2; Best is Shift-3 and Custom is Shift-4. But I also frequently change the Resolution of the Canvas. Click on the Command Group: All Motion Commands and let's do another search and I'll type in resolution and there are my four resolution commands and I'll assign these as well. I can see that the Full Resolution setting already has a command associated with it. I'll select it and press the Delete key on my keyboard to erase it. Now I can assign a new command. Full Res is Option key and the number 1; and for Half Res I'll choose Option 2; Third Res Option 3 and Quarter Res Option 4. When you're done click Save and then Close. Now in the Render pop-up in the Status Bar you see all my new keyboard shortcuts. And typing Option and then a number is a lot faster way to change the Resolution of your scene. Let's say you know a shortcut but don't remember what it does. Back to the Command Editor, type in the shortcut in the search field and it shows it to you that way. You can tell which keys have already been assigned by looking at the Virtual Keyboard and if you see a small black. then that key is being used. Click on a key here and in the Key Detail Panel on the lower right you get a list of all the Commands associated with that key. Let's close that. You can also share your custom key commands with your colleagues by exporting the current set. The Command Editor is a very powerful way of streamlining repetitive tasks. If you don't like Motion's default shortcut change it to something you like. Life's too short to spend time playing Twister on your keyboard.
