Motion 3 Basics / Objects & Layers

Subtitles of the Movie

Now in this module I really want to focus on Objects and working with Objects. So, we've already worked with an Object previously but we did that for the purposes of shortening and lengthening the duration of your project. Now I'm going to start a brand new project, so I'll do Command New, or File, New and I'll keep my Preset for iPod Video here, so, and I'll click on OK here. And now I'll got a Canvas that looks like this and I'm ready to add an object to my Canvas. Now I want to start with something relatively simple here, so let me go to the Library. And you can follow along with me if you want to. There are lots of things in the Library that you could grab and start to work with for an object, but I'll start with something relatively simple here. Under Content I'll look through my Gadgets, or here you could also use the Search, and you can search for Clocks, and here are a couple of clocks that are nice. A Wall Clock, Clock Gears, or a Wall Clock Fast. So, because this has a little more movement I'll select it, and I'll click on Apply, or I will drag and drop this onto my Canvas like so. Now notice here that this object is scaled such that it doesn't really fit very nicely onto the Canvas. Well, how do you deal with that? You can do the zoom Functions, zoom in and zoom out, remember, by holding down the Command key and hitting the Minus key on your keyboard or the Plus key to zoom in. So if I zoom out like this I can grab these object handles on the side to resize my object. And I can widen it, squish it up if I want to, or Ð I'm going to hit Undo here Ð if I hold down the Shift key I can resize and keep my scaling in tact. So, now it doesn't matter if I move the mouse up or down or sideways, I have an object that remains to scale. So, now I can drag and drop it and notice here if I get the Canvas Guides centered I get a crosshair in the middle of the Canvas, so sometimes that's important, sometimes not, but the Guides will help you get your object to the center of the Canvas both horizontally and vertically, like so. Now I'm ready to zoom back in to the Canvas. Let me go to 100 percent. And I can further resize if I want to, and that's fine. And now you can see I can play through this by just hitting the Spacebar and looking at Wall Clock Fast. Now. If you've worked with pictures or movies and other applications you probably know that it's relatively easy to make copies of something. So if I want to put multiple instances of this image throughout my Canvas all I have to do is click and drag. The difference, though, if I click and drag I reposition the object. If I hold down the Option key and click and drag I create a copy of this object. So now what you see in your Timeline here is Wall Clock Fast Copy. That's the thing that's selected, and notice that these things are moving perfectly in sync like so. So again, that may be exactly what you want, it may not be exactly what you want. If I select that clock, that's the original Wall Clock Fast. And there it is. If I want these things to play a little bit out of sync all I have to do is select one of them and just move the Timeline a little bit. All I have to do with the drag and drop is do that, and now I get something that looks like this. Now remember I can then use this to modify my In and Out Points Ð so you're already building on the skills you've learned earlier Ð if you don't want that to happen in your project all I have to do is click and drag this and now my project looks like this between my In and my Out Point. Let me do resetting on my Out Point here. Again, I can just click and drag if I want to or I can use my keyboard shortcuts. And I'll play between my In and Out Points and my project starts to look like this. So, that's a look at Objects, and as you can see I have multiple objects on the Canvas. I also have multiple Layers to my project and we'll get to that in just a little bit. But if you want to just double check your work, remember you can hit the Function F5 key and now you've got both of these objects. If you want to remove one of these things by the way, all you have to do is either select it in a Canvas and hit the Delete key, or you can select it in the Project Pane here and hit the Delete key. And again, if you change your mind Command Z is there for you to Undo your last action. F5 once again, and now I'm ready for the next module.
