Configure Motion Preferences / Change Project Properties

Subtitles of the Movie

Alright, as you're working with your projects you're going to end up with stuff that looks like this. And this is actually, this looks like text on just a still image, but actually what's behind here, the background that the text is appearing on, is actually a slide show and that slide show is playing at 30 frames per second. In fact you can check this up in the upper left-hand corner of the Canvas by looking at this value right here. And right now playback's a little less than 30 frames per second, but you know, the application's doing its best to get there. We'll also talk about how to increase your playback speed here in this chapter as you've seen. Now, you're not locked into this. If you change your mind, if you're working on a project and decide, you know what, I don't want the project to be output, or I don't want to work at 30 frames per second. So, just to review a couple of things here. If you look at your Motion Preferences you will notice here if you go to the Project Section that most of your Project default Properties are a function of items that you set here. Now, each project, however, has its own set of properties that you can get to and change by clicking on the Edit Menu and then choosing Project Properties, or Command J will get you there as well. That brings up this dialog box that you see here and you can use a different Preset from here, again, if you change your mind about what you want the Aspect Ratio to be. So, let's make just a quick change here and let's do, oh, right now it's 720P. I'll just change it to iPod Video, if you decide that that's going to be your output. Now, the only thing that doesn't change is your Frame Rate, but again that can be changed as well. So, let's see what the change is going to be if I do a Preset to an iPod. Now, notice what has happened here, and this is why you know we spend some time with it here, now the size of the object that I'm working with is much bigger than my Canvas. So I'll zoom in just to the Canvas sides by doing a Shift Z, but now that changes what's visible in the Canvas. Now you can go back up to your Project Properties and of course Reverse back if you need to. So, we'll do that. We'll switch it back to NTSC DV, the little. tells me that that's the default setting, but that's how you would switch settings mid-stream for your project. Now, if you wanted to take a project that you have and render it for export somewhere else, like for the Web or for an iPod, then you could do that by clicking on Ð and I think I changed it back, let's make sure. Yeah I did change it back. So, you would go File and Export and using the Export options here you could export using a QuickTime Movie, you have some other choices here as well, but if we were to re-render this project at say, Lower Frame Rate, and then we could use a different Frame Rate in our Motion project if we wanted to but if you click on Options here you get to the Output tab, and you can use either the Current Project and Canvas settings, or you can use Half Resolution and you can choose your Render Quality to Normal, Draft, or Best, and you can use different Frame Rates. So, you could tweak the Frame Rate down a little bit so that you'll have a much smaller file when you go and export a current project. It won't change your current project, it creates a new QuickTime Movie using these settings. And of course if you wanted to shortcut this with a couple of Presets and you knew exactly what your destination medium was going to be, say like an iPod, then you can just choose that shortcut and it essentially does the same things as what I just did. It chooses either the Project Frame Rate or a different Frame Rate, but the resolution for iPod Video sets the resolution automatically at 320 by 240 as you can see.
