Projects / Clips and Sequences / Playing a Clip
Subtitles of the Movie
Alright let's play a clip in the viewer, let's pretend as we have here that we've got all the footage we need, its already been imported for us, so we got it in the browser, now let's find something and start to build a sequence and the first thing we need to do is decide what we want to add to our sequence and we do that by bringing up one of our video clips, typically video clip is where we start, we bring that up in the viewer window. Which right now is behind this expanded browser but again that is about to change. It won't matter for now because I'm just going to find what I'm going to play. So lots of ways to do this again, of course you can expand little arrows or chevrons to then look through your footage and what I'll also do is I'll use the keyboard as well. So if I use the back arrow it will expand and contract the bins or folders and then if I go down it will navigate me down a folder hierarchy. Now, if you're trying to press - the thing that's a little bit confusing about this in my opinion is that if from here, from this top level bin I press the down arrow, nothing will happen, you'll just have to take my word for it, but nothing's happening here. But if I want to jump down to that lower level hierarchy I then press the forward arrow or if you're using a laptop it'll have the end right next to it. But that will jump down a level and now if I press the up and down arrow I can navigate through that level of the hierarchy. Notice if I keep going up I go back to this top level bin and I have to press the forward arrow to jump down into this level of the hierarchy. So now how do I expand this folder, well I do so by again pressing the right arrow or the forward arrow and then again if I press down it won't take me down to this American Woman file or Dream Sequence audio, it will take me instead down to audio render files. So what I'm looking for here is a video sequence and so I will just use the arrows to navigate down to the hard way underscore CS01 and let's just say we do, woops, let me do this one more time. Down and then again press the forward arrow and let's do, I don't know, let's do this, go down to Gary enters pool, handheld and press either the enter on your keyboard or you can drag and drop this clip up into the viewer window which again is a little obscured by the way I've got the browser right now, but that's ok. Again, I'm going to use the keyboard shortcut. Good. So there is that clip that I just mentioned and we've got the beginning of the clip that is noted by what looks like sprockets of a film, that is the beginning of the clip. I can navigate quickly to the end of the clip by holding down the function key and then hitting that right arrow of in and the way that I know that I'm at the end of a particular clip is that I get the right side sprocket. This is all behavior that can be governed by the view menu and choosing show overlays, it is on by default so there's some other overlays that you'll see when you start to make your edits but these are the two that I want to point out right off the bat. Again, function key and the back arrow will take you to the very beginning of the clip, function key, right arrow will take you to the end of the clip. Now as you start to work with your clips maybe you'll want to configure your workspace so that you've got some more space in the viewer and maybe you also want some more space in the canvas as well or maybe the canvas is not quite as important as being able to see what your looking at in the viewer. Now that I've got my focus on the viewer here, I've got this picture up I can then play through it using my play controls down here and there's a lot of stuff that's going on in all the windows and I think it can be alittle overwhelming, so I just want to focus on the buttons or the clicks that will be most relevant for a particular lesson. That's the approach I'm going to take through out this entire tutorial. So to start to play through this clip what I'd like to show you is that you can hit these buttons down here to play and notice the tool tip comes up that let's me hit the spacebar to start to play through a sequence. Now the video here is choppy and the reason why that video is choppy is because I've got this set, if I go to my sequence there's a button here called RT and that defines the real time playback for your sequence or for a clip in a viewer. I've got this video quality set to very low and that is because the footage that I've imported is a pretty high resolution and it won't playback very smoothly unless I have this low quality playback. I've also got this safe real time check which should be the default that is selected. So that's something to keep in mind as you playback your sequence that may affect you it may not it may depend on the type of footage that you have. But again the spacebar controls the playing and the pausing of your footage. You can also navigate through your footage by clicking and dragging this little jobie right here and that's called the play head and I've already mentioned the play head, earlier but that shows you the exact point in time your at in the footage so you can scroll back and forth through your footage like that. You can also use what's called the scrubber and the jog controls. This is over on the left hand side, this is the scrubber and I can scrub through my footage by moving this to the right and the left and the more I hold it to the left or the right the faster it will accelerate through the footage. This over here is what's known as the jog control and this lets me drag through my footage just a few clips at a time. So again I will click and drag either to the left or to the right to cue up a particular frame in the clip. So that gets you started with pulling something up in your viewer and starting to navigate around to find the shots or the takes that you want to then add to your sequences.
